G. BLBELL. AIR BRUSHSPOON.
No. 498,227. Patented May 30; 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ELLSWORTH BELL, OF WEST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
. AIR-BRUSH SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,227, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed September 29, 1892. Serial No. 447,284. (No model.)
I spoons for air brushes or point distributers,
the object in view being to provide a replaceable point to form a bearing for the needle, whereby when worn it may be replaced by a new point.
Heretoforeit has been the practice to patch air-brush spoons by means of solder, applied at the point where worn by the pressure and contact of the needle, but this is a slow operation and requires expertness' which is not ordinarily possessed by the operators. It is also inexpedient to replace the entire spoon on account of the expense attendant upon such a change and also for the reason that few operators are capable of adjusting the spoon properly.
My invention consists in a replaceable point, which can be applied to the spoon by I any one without previous knowledge of the art, the construction and operation thereof being clearly described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof being particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a spoon with a point, embodying my invention, applied in the. operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a replaceable point. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of an air-brush or point-distributor, with the spoon provided with my attachment applied in the operative position thereto.
The portion of an air brush spoon which becomes worn by use, is close to the point, thereby preventing the needle from resting firmly therein, and therefore I provide the replaceable point, A, which is attached to the spoon, B, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, said point conforming exactly to the shape of the end of the spoon, and lying in contact with its inner surface. The guide groove, 0,
which is formed at the apex of the downwardly convergent sides, D D, of the point, is
provided in lieu of the usual groove which is formed, primarily, in the end of the spoon, the point being further provided with upwardly and rearwardly divergent retaining arms, E E, which lie in contact with the front edges of the spoon and terminate at about the centers of the edges thereof in downwardly bent clips, F F, which engage the edges of the spoon and hold the replaceable point in position thereon. The points may be made of any suitable material, such as steel, tin, copper, brass, nickel, German silver, &c. Furthermore the shape of the points is such as to adapt them to be applied to any spoon. The clips are bent so as to bite the edges of the spoon tightly, to prevent displacement. One of these points may be applied to a spoon without loss of time or previous preparation by an inexperienced operative, thus making the spoon as effective as at first. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In combination with an air brush spoon, the replaceable point adapted to be attached thereto, substantially as specified. 1
2. A replaceable point for air brush spoons, provided with a groove to guide the needles, and having securing devices, substantially as specified.
3. A replaceable point for air brush spoons provided with arms carrying clips to engage the edges of the spoon, substantially as specified.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a point for air brush spoons, provided with a guide groove and rearwardly divergent arms provided with clips, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ELLSWORTH BELL.
