N0. 495,057 Patented Apr. 11, 1893 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY JOSEPHINE POST, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
COMBlNED WAIST AND SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,057, dated April 11, 1893.
Application filed December 20, 1892- Scrlal No.455,787. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that LMARY JOSEPHINE Pos'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hohoken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens W'aists, of which. the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates in general to undergarments for children, but more particularly refers to a useful and novel improvement in childrens underwaists adapted for either sex, (but especially designed for boys wear.)
The particular object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, convenient, and comfortable form of underwaisthaving all necessary appliances and appendages for properly fastening and suspending the various articles of wear or apparel worn by young children, and especially boys attired in what is known as hilt-skirts.
In brief, myinvention is so designed to supply a waist to which all the nether garments of the wearer can be conveniently, quickly, and securely attached.
My invention has for its further object to furnish a device of this class which will relieve all that strain and weight from about the waist and hips heretofore found objectionable in that it is exceedingly tiresome besides marring the shape of the waist. For the attainment of these objects,-and for other purposes hereinafter described, my invention comprises certain details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be more fully set forth hereinafter and the specific points of novelty in which will be pointed out by the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification :-Figure l is a rear perspective view of the waist showing the shoulderbraces buttoned into proper wearing position but the waist open at the back. Fig. 2 is a front view of the waist illustrating the appliances about the girdle for attaching the nether garments. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the two front flaps broken away to exhibit the underneath devices. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a waist open at the back, the shoulder-braces being unbuttoned, and the complete garment in an open fiat position.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shoulder-bracestay-straps by which the braces are sewed to the shoulder straps 0f the waist. Fig. 6 is a detail section on line m$ of Fig. 5 showing a difierent manner of securing the suspender tapes to the stay-strip.
Like letters of reference mark the same or corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 4, A designates the waist proper made of muslin or other suitable fabric, and is shaped and fitted according to requirements.
It will be understood that the style or pattern of the garment, and the material of which it is formed, constitute no component part of my invention, and thereforemay be varied at will. As shown, the waist is made open at the back for the purpose of convenience merely: it could be made open at the front just as well, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. r
B, B, indicate the stay-straps of the braces. They serve as attaching mediums for the braces and are sewed to the under side of the waist-shoulder-straps as shown clearlyin Fig. 4. These straps, B, B, are made of suitable shape to conform to the position in which they are sewed and are made of a piece of ordinary strong muslin. The shoulder-braces are made in two similar halves or sections, C, 0, each section comprising the three tapes, D, D, D. The upper extremities of the tapes, D, D, are severally attached to the adjacent ends of the stay-strap, J5, the tape D, being sewed tothe rear end while the tape D, is likewise attached to the front of the staystrap. As shown in Fig. 5, the ends of the straps, D, D, may be attached to the staystrap, B, in either of two ways. In one instance the stay-strap is made of two layers or thicknesses at its ends and the end of the brace-strap sewed therebetween, or as in the other case, the brace-strap can be sewed down between the stay-strap and the muslin of the Waist as shown clearly in Fig. 6. The lower extremity of the strap, D, is sewed or other wise attached to the upper edge of a strip, E, made of muslin and provided with three buttonholes, F, F, F, along its inner edge. The lower end of the other tape, D, is sewed to a stay-shield, G, at the bottom of each section,
ICO'
strip, E, of the other section has buttons, I, I,
along its vertical inner edge. Thus it will be understood that the tapes, D,D,D" are held 1n shape by the strips, E, E, E, being overlapped and buttoned together in the manner shown in Fig. 1. When the garment is adjusted upon the wearer, the tape, D, passes underneath the arm in front down along the side and comes out to shield, G, on one side slightly above the small of the back. The tape, D, passes down from the shoulder over the back to the strip, E. The stocking-supporters, J, 'J, are severally attached in any suitable manner to the shields, G, G, at their upper ends and are secured to the stockings in the usual manner at their lower extremiies.
In Fig. l, I have shown the stocking-supporters attached on' one side to the shield, G, by a safety-pin, K, while on the other side they are suspended by means of slip-catch or hook, L, designed to slip over the neck of the button, M, sewed on the shield. Either of these methods of attachment maybe employed Without departing from the spirit of my in- Vention.
Referring now to Figs. 2 and 3, the outside of the waist along the girdle lineis stayed by the horizontal strips, M, M, M, and by the vertical seam-strips, N, N. The strip, M, runs from the vertical facing, O, of the back to the seam-strip, N, and is provided along its lower edge with a shield-shaped flap, P
- ton, Q.
having a button-hole, P, therein. Underneath this flap, P, is a V-shaped tape, Q, sewed to the girdle and carrying at its apex the but- From the seam-strip, N, to the seamstrip, N, runs the girdle stay-strip,M, sewed to the waist and provided with the three shield-shaped flaps, R, R, R, the flaps R, B, being similar to the flap, P, while the fiap,R, is sewed tightly down upon the waist. Underneath the flaps, R, R", are V-shaped tapes, Q, and buttons, Q. The stay-strip M is similar in location and arrangement to the strip M. On the seam-strips, N, N, near the girdle line are two buttons, S, S, severallyin taching means for all the articles of apparel that might be worn byyoung children. Ido not deem it necessary 'to describe in detail how each and every separate garment is fastened at the girdle of-the waist, as it will be manifest that this may be accomplished in.
various ways according to the demands of the moment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I- claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture awaist having shoulder-straps; a stay-strip secured to the under side of each shoulder-strap; a front suspendertape attached to the front of the stay-strip and passing down from the front of the shoulder strap back to a tab to which it is secured; a back Suspender-tape secured to the rear of the stay-strip and passing back of the shoulder strap to a buttoning-strip to which it is secured; a Suspender tape connected to each buttoning strip at its upper end and to the said tab at its lower end; and a detachable fastener for each section of the suspenders composed of two buttoning-strips severally attached as aforesaid to the. suspender-sections and adapted to be detachably fastened together at the center of the back, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a waist having shoulder-straps; a stay-strip sewed to the under side of each shoulder-strap; and holding a section of suspenders depending freely from said shouldenstraps; said suspenders made in two sections detachably secured together in the center of the back, each section comprising a front tape secured to the stay-strip at its upper end and to a tab at its lower end, a back-tape extending from the rear of the stay-strip to the detachable fastener at the back, and a suspender tape connecting said fastener to said tab, substantially as specified.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a waist having shoulder-straps; a stay-strip sewed to the under side of each shoulder-strap; suspenders made in two sections detachably fastened together at the back, and each section being independently supported by two tapes depending from each stay-strip; a tab joining the tapes of each suspender-section at their lower ends; and stocking supporters depending independently of the waist from the said tabs, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
