C. M. FLOYD. BBD.
NO. 494,580. PatentedApr. 4,1898;
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. FLOYD, OF IDA GROVE, IOWA.
BED.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,560, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed October 24, 1892. Serial No. 449.749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. FLOYD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ida Grove, in the county of Ida and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Attachment for a Crib or Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to prevent children from falling out of beds and also to retain the bed clothes in position as required to keep a child covered and protected from the dangers to health incident to the displacement of covers while children are in bed.
My invention consists in the construction, application and operation of detachable fenders and bed-clothes-holders, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, andillustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed showing my invention applied thereto as required for practical operation. Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical sectional view of the bed and attachments. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a part of one of the fenders having a clamping device for fastening it to the bed and one of the bed-clothes holders combined therewith.
A, A, represent the parallel side pieces of a crib or bed and B B my detachable fenders. Each fender is preferably composed of two straight bars that are connected by means of a series of cross pieces as required to produce a light and strong frame and attachment adapted to be fixed to the side piece of a crib or bed to project upward therefrom and to serve as a means of keepin g a child therein.
O are flexible metal plates fixed to the opposite sides of downward projections D on the under sides of the fendersB in such a mauner that they can be readily placed astride thereto. These metal plates are preferably covered with felt, or other suitable cushioning material, to protect the pieces A from becoming scratched or marked. F are metal plates fixed to the outside of the outer plates Oand adapted in shape to support thumb screws H that project inward through screw-threaded' perforations therein to engage the flexible plate C on the outside of the side piece A as required to clamp that plate fast to the said sidepiece.
J are bed-clothes-holders consisting of coil- Springs fixed to the under sides of the fenders B and provided at their lower ends with integral extensions K that are adapted to project downward on the outsides of the pieces A to clasp and hold bed clothes that are extended outward and downward over the sides of the bed, as shown in Fig. 1, and as required to preventa child under the bed clothes from becoming uncovered and exposed to cold and dangers frequently at-tending the displacement of bed clothing. o
The utility of the invention is obvious and the manner of constructing and applying it to a bed will be readily understood by any person of ordinary intelligence. It is also obvious that .the manner of constructing the fenders and fastening them to the sides of a bed may vary and that the forms and numbers of the bed-clothes-holders attached to the fenders may also vary.
I claim as my invention- 1. The springs J, having extensions K, and adapted to engage the top surface and also the outside face of the rail or side piece of a bed fixed to the frames B and means for connecting the said frames to the sides of a bed in combination with the side A of a bed to clasp bed clothes to the top edge and outside surface of the said side A, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fender and bed-clothes holder, for beds, comprising a frame having means connected therewith for detachably fastening it on top of the side piece of a bed, and springs projecting downward therefrom and adapted to press bed clothes fast to the side pieces of the bed, in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
