UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.OOLOMBIA L. YATES, OF UPPER LISLE, NEW YORK.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,822, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed June 15, 1889. Serial No. 314,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, COLOMBIA L. YATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Lisle, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bag-Holder, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in bag-holders; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag-holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view of the same.
The frame of myimproved bag-holder consists of a U-shapedbar A, having the brackets B secured to its outer side and supported by means of the legs C, having their upper ends pivoted to the said brackets. At its center and at its ends the U-shaped bar is provided with the hooks D, which are mounted in suitable vertical openings in the said bar, and are normally projected upward by springs E, arranged around their shanks between the bar and the heads F of the hooks. The points of the hooks project inward beneath the U-shaped bar, and then extend vertically upward through the guide-loops G on the inner side of said bar. Between the hooks I secure to the bar A the keepers H, which are adapted to engage over the edge of the bag, and thereby hold the mouth of the bag open.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a bag-holder which is very simple in its construction, and it is thought that its advantages will be readily appreciated. The bag to be filled has its edge slipped under the keepers H, and is then engaged by the hooks D. The mouth of the bag will thus be held distended and the bag firmly supported while being filled. WVhen the bag has been filled, the hooks are depressed so as to be disengaged from the bag, and the bag will thereby be released. The springs arranged around the hooks automatically return them to their elevated positions to support another bag, and the guideloops on the inner side of the frame serve as a partial support for the bag, and thereby prevent the weight of the contents of the bag drawing the same downward on the hooks to such an extent as to tear and injure the fabric of which the bag is made.
By pivoting the supporting legs to the frame, as shown and described, I am enabled to support the frames in a horizontal position over an inclined or uneven surface, and can fold the device into a compact form when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a bag-holder, the combination of the frame and the keepers secured on the upper side of the same and projecting inward and downward therefrom to engage over the upper edge of the bag, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame, of the h ooks mounted vertically therein and adapted to engage the bag, and the springs arranged around the shanks of the hooks between the frame and the heads of the hooks, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the frame, of the keepers secured thereto, the guideloops on the inner side thereof, the hooks mounted vertically in the frames and having their points playing through the said guide-loops, and the springs arranged around the shanks of the hooks between the frame and the heads of the hooks, as set forth.
4:. The improved bag-holder herein described and shown, consisting of the U- shaped frame, the brackets secured to the outer side thereof, the supporting-legs. pivoted to said brackets, the spring-actuated hooks mounted in the frame and adapted to engage the bag, and the keepers secured to the frame and adapted to engage over the edge of the bag, as set forth.
5. In a bag-holder, the frame, combined with the right-angled hooks mounted therein, and the springs coiled around the body of the hooks and bearing against the frame, as set forth. 7
' 6. In a bag-holder, the frame having the guide-loops on the inner side, and the springactuated U-shaped hooks mounted in the frame and having their points engaging the loops, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
COLOMBIA L. YATES.
Witn esses DAVID L. MAXFIELD, CHARLES ROGERS.
