Be it known that I, J. V. HENRY NOTT, of Guilderland, in the county of Albany, and State of New York,

have invented a new and improved Bag Holder; and"I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and

exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, i

The present invention relates to a new and useful device for holding the'mouth of a bag open while being filled, whereby it can be lled with readiness and despatchgand it consists in arranging upon an upright post or `standard a frame consisting of two similar bent on curved horizontal spring arms, both having their upper edge made with an outward projecting lip or angefaind attached to a common centre-piece or collar placed over said post, and sliding loosely thereon, over the anges of which arms, across from one to thc other, the edge of the mouth of the bag is placed by bringing or bending the two arms toward each other; when, rclasing them, they immediately spring apart, drawing and holding the mouth of the bag tightly on and between them, and sufficiently open to enable the bag to be iilled with the utmost convenience and ease; the said bag-holdingframe being also so arranged upon the post or standard provided for it that it can be adjusted and set at any desired height thereon, according to the length of the bag which is to be held by it to be filled.

The figure in the accompanying plate of drawings represents my invention, and/ is a perspective viewof my improved bag holder, with a bag suspended or hung upon it; the bag holder, for the purpose of illustrating, being shown as 'arranged or placed upon a suitable base or platform A. This base is mounted on rollers or casters, so that it can be freely moved about from one place to another, and has extending from it an upright post or standard B, over which, by its collar or lsleeve portion C, is placed my bag-holding `frame D, consisting of two similar horizontally bent or curved spring arms F, which, together, ferm a semicircle, or nearly so. Each of these arms, F, is provided with an outward projecting lip or iangc a along their upper edges, ovelcach of which the opposite sides of the edge of the mouth of the bag G is lapped o'r placed, when the holder is to be used, hy

bringing or bending the said yarms in and toward cach other; when, releasing them, they immediately spring apart er open, as it were, tightly drawing and holding the mouth of the bagon and between them, as is obvious, and suicicntly open to enable it to be filled with the utmost facility and convenience. The frame D, `by its sleeve C on the post, may be fastened at any desired height by means of a set-screw properly applied to it therefor; but in order to facilitate and simplify its adjustment, and make it self-fastening, I forni -a series of notches, d el, at the upper portion ofthe post B, and upon its side, from which the frameA extends, with which notches, by the gravity of the frame and the bag hung or suspended from it, the lower edge of the sleeve portion of the fi'ameengages, and is there so held until released,'by raising the frame sniiicicntly therefor, as is manifest without further explanation; 'the particular notch with which the bag-holding frame is so engaged depending r upon the height at 'which it is desired to have the mouth of the bag, and according t-o the lcngthof the saine. i

For convenience of transportation of the bag holder, the post B may be mortised inthe base A, or in any other proper manner attached to it, so that it can be detached at pleasure. Y

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patcntt The-frame D, consisting of two bent or curved spring arms l", each having an outward projecting lip or flange, in combination with the post or standard B, when arranged together, so as ,tzo operate substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
