Be it known that I, EMILY DYETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which this invention relatesto make and use the same.

My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the best form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention; and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

Referring to the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bag-holding device, showing one bag held in operative position and a reserve bag also supported thereby, the cover being raised and partly broken away. Fig. 2 represents a similar view showing the bag-holding device with a reserve bag held in position and the bag to be filled removed, the cover being also shown raised and partly broken away. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view of the bagholder with a bag held therein in position to be filled and a reserve bag also held in rear thereof, the cover being shown in closed position.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient holding device intended principally for domestic use, (although it may be used for other purposes,) which will support a bag of paper or other flexible material in convenient position for filling with dust, paper, and the like waste materials accumulating in a house and also provide a cover for closing the mouth of the bag when so held to prevent the escape of such waste material, and, further, to provide a support for a reserve bag or bags which can be held in operative position after one bag is filled and removed.

My improved bag-holding device, as shown in the accompanying drawings, is constructed as follows: A represents a back or support forined,preferably, of wood and provided with means for attaching it to a wall or other stationary part. In the drawings I have shown said back provided at its upper edge with a screw-eye a, by means of which the device may be hung or supported upon a nail or hook.

To the back A is secured a frame B, preferably formed of a single piece of wire having its ends secured to the back A in any desired manner, as shown at I) b. The central part of wire frame B is formed into a broad upturned supporting-loop B to support the bottom of a bag or bags, and the central part of the upturned loop is bent to form a small supporting-hook 6, upon which a dust pan and brush or other article may be conveniently hung. The back A and wire frame B form together the frame of the bag-supporting device, which is supported by means of the screweye or in any other desired manner from a stationary device.

The supporting-frame is provided at its upper end with a pivoted open frame for hold. ing the mouth of a bag open and also for supporting the hinged cover, hereinafter de-, scribed, when said cover is in closed position. This open pivoted frame is preferably formed. of a single piece of wire or other suitable material C and pivotally connected to the back A, in this instance by staples c 0. The portion of the Wire between the staples c c is preferably bent downwardly adjacent to each pivotal connection and extends horizontally across below the level of the pivotal connection, as shown at a, forming a clamping portion which engages the back A and holds the frame C in an inclined position projecting outwardly from the back A. The portions of the wire outside of the staples are bent downwardly, as shown at c 0 and then forwardly, forming two arms 0 0 which are connected at their forward ends by a cross-piece 0*, the central portion of which is formed into a rectangular loop bent upwardly and then downwardly in rear of the cross-piece 0*, as shown at 0", thus forming a clip for holding the frontedge of the bag, while the upper portions of said clip (indicated at c o serve to support the hinged cover.

D represents the cover formed of metal or papier-mach, cardboard, or other suitable material and hinged to the back A, in this instance by means of staples (Z (Z. The cover is slightly larger than the cover pivoted frame (1 and is preferably provided on its front edge and at its sides with a downwardlyextending flange (Z d, as shown, to more completely inclose the mouth of the bag and prevent material from escaping therefrom.

The back A is preferably provided with a supplemental spring-clip E for the purpose of holding the back flap of the bag in use and also for holding one or a number of reserve bags, (to be used one at a time as required,) as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

F represents the bag which I prefer to use with my improved bag-holding device and is provided adjacent to its mouth with closingfiapsf, as shown. This bag forms the subjectmatter of another invention for which I intend to apply for Letters Patent and its specific construction will therefore not be particularly described herein.

The operation of the bag-holding device will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings. The device is hung or otherwise supported in a convenient place and is provided with one or more bags, the reserve bag or bags having their upper edges inserted beneath the spring-clip E. The bag which is to be filled has the edge of its rear part (or the flap connected thereto) placed beneath the clip E and the portion a of the pivoted frame G, and the weight of the frame which projects from the back A, and therefore affords a certain leverage, will clamp the rear part against the back A. The upper edge of the front part of the bag is placed within the clip at the front part of pivoted frame 0 and will be held between the part c of the loop and the portions 0" of the cross-piece. as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thus holding the bag open. The lower end or bottom of the bag rests within the supporting-loop B of the supporting-frame, which prevents the bag from being pulled away from the pivoted frame C and supports the weight of the contents of the bag. When the cover D is lowered into closed position, it will rest upon the upwardly-bent portions 0 of the clip 0 a, formed by bending the side portions of the rectangular loop, and will be supported thereby, so as to keep the contents of the bag F from escaping. Asa bagis filled itis removed from the bag-holding device and one of the bags supported by the clipE is removed therefrom and placed in position to be filled, as previously described.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a bag-holding device, the combination with the supporting-frame, comprising the rigid back provided with the means for supporting the same and a wire frame connected to said back and provided at its lower end with a supporting-loop for receiving the bottom of the bag, said back being provided with means for engaging the inner portion of the mouth of the bag to support the same, of a rigid open frame connected to said back adapted to surround the mouth of the bag, and having a front cross-piece forward of said back, provided with portions for engaging the outer and also the inner side of the front portion of the mouth of the bag for holding the bag in open position, substantially as described.

2. In a bag-holding device, the combination with the vertical supporting-frame provided at its lower end witha support for the bottom of the bag and having at its upper end a vertically-disposed spring-clip, of an open rectangular frame hinged to the upper part of the main frame and provided with means for maintaining it in an angle to the main frame, said open frame being adapted to surround a bag and having an outer cross-piece at a distance from the main frame provided with separated portions for engaging the'inner and outer sides of the front portion of the mouth of the bag and a cover hinged to said main frame above the said open frame and adapted to be supported thereby, substantially as described.

3. In a bag-holding device, the combination with the supporting-frame comprising the rigid back and a wire frame connected thereto having the ends of the wire connected to said back and the central portion formed into a supporting-loop for receiving the bottom of the bag, an open frame formed of wire, pivotally connected to said back, and provided with a rear clamping member for engaging said back below the pivotal connection therewith, and having its front part provided with a clip to receive the front part of the mouth of the bag, and a cover pivoted to the back and adapted to engage said pivoted frame when in closed position and be supported thereby, substantially as described.

4. In a bag-holding device, the combination with the supporting-frame comprising the rigid back provided with means for supporting it in a vertical position and a wire frame connected to said back and provided at its lower end with outwardly and upwardly bent portions for supporting the bottom of the bag, a spring-clip secured centrally to the rigid back adjacent to its upper end, a rigid rectangular open frame pivotally connected to said back and provided with adownwardly-extending clamping member adjacent to said back for maintaining said open frame at an angle to said back, said open frame being constructed to surround the mouth of the bag and having a front piece parallel to and at a distance from said back provided with separate portions for engaging the inner and outer sides of the front portion of the mouth of the bag and a cover hinged to said back above said open frame and adapted to be supported thereby, substantially as described.
