To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, FREDERICK C. BAM- MAN, HOWARD G. Tool), and JAMES W. PAx TON, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag Holders and Carriers, of which the following is a' specification.

This invention relates to bag holding receptacles or appliances, and pertains especially to appliances for holding and suspending street sweepers sacks as well as other sacks or bags open and in proper condition and position for filling, removal, replacement and refilling.

The object of the invention is to provide holders especially applicable to street sweepers sacks, sacks for refuse deposit boxes, mail bags, grain bags and the like, and to furnish novel and peculiar means in a street sweepers cart, refuse box, and mail bag rack, in cooperation with the holders for suspending the sacks or bags and the holders.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for holding and suspending a plurality of sacks or bags 1n open condition and in such position as to permit the bags to be filled, removed, and replaced without the usual appliances, utilization, and operation of clamping, hooking or employing other devices commonly used for these puroses. p A still further object of the invention is to provide means for holding a plurality of bags in open condition, and to furnish means for suspending the bags with the holders in such position as to be slid horizontally to various positions without removing or detaching the bags from the holders, and with out lifting or changing the condition of the ba s.

it still further object of the invention is to provide means for holding bags of various length and size in a casing or inclosure of special construction, whereby the filled as well as the empty bags may be given various suspended positions within the casing, and whereby the filled bags may be successively slid in upright position, out of the casing.

Various other objects, advantages, and improved results are attainable in the practical application of the invention as will be hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved street sweepers cart embodying the invention, and showing one of the top doors in open position for filling the exposed bags of a plurality of bags contained within the cart. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of part of one of the sides and bottom of the cart showing the rails, and end door bracket. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the bag holding frames. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of part of the end door. Fig. 5 is a detail cross section showing a long and a short bag in suspended filling positions. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view, partly broken away, showing the broom hooks. Fig. 7 shows the rails and a holder applied to a refuse box. Fig. 8 shows the rails and distending holder as arranged for mail bags and grain bags. Fig. 9 is an enlarged section of rail, frame and bag.

The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings. Our invention involves improvements in hand carts for street sweepers use as well as improvements in the devices for holding the mouth of bags distended and the bags suspended within the body of the carts, and street refuse collecting boxes. The said devices also being applicable to mail bags, to grain sacks, and to any other sacks or bags capable of distention and suspension for filling, removal, and replacement.

We have provided for a cooperation of the bag mouth distender and the distender support which shall depend entirely upon the weight of a bag and its contents for holding the bag in upright suspended and open posi tion, prior to, during, and after filling, and which shall permit the bag or a plurality of bags to be slid horizontally while in said position, whether said cooperating devices are used in connection with hand carts, or any other article capable of having said supports and the distender applied thereto.

The hand cart body comprises a combination pipe and angle iron frame 1, or other suitable metal frame, to which isattached sheet metal body sides 2, a fixed rear end 3, and a bottom composed of metal slats l secured at each end to the bottom cross members 4 of the frame. The top cross mem bers 5 of the frame are provided with a U- shaped brace bar 6. A pair of drop axles 7 are secured to and between vertical portions of angle braces 8 extending from the top filled bags are successively slid upon the horizontal member to the bottom horizontal memberof said frame on each side ofthe cart body. Said axles are central of and extend under the cart body so as to evenly balance said body when mounted on wheels 9. A pilot wheel or caster 10 is secured under and adjacent to the rear end ofthe body, and this end is provided with an implement holding rack 11, and a handle 12.

A pair of top doors 13 are hinged together central of the body and these doors are laced with noise-deadening rope 14. The front of the body is provided with a removable door 15 having dust guards or side flanges 16 on the inner face thereof making a close joint between this door and the sides of the cart body. The lower corners of the door 15 have a notch 17 fitting catch brackets 18 on the bottom frame 1' of the body, and the top of this door is clamped in closed position by a special swinging bail l9, hereinafter particularly described. One orboth sides of the body is provided at one end with an upwardly turned hook 20, and at the other end with a downwardly turned hook 20 for holding the handle of a street brush 21. -The inner face of each of the body sides 2 is provided with longitudinal upper and

22 and 28 respectively, which extend throughout the length of the cart body, and said rails constitute supports for the bag mouth distending frames or holders 24:. The bags or sacks 25 are used in any number capable of being accommodated by the rails with the holders distending the mouth of the bags. The bag holder and mouth distender comprises a rectangular stiff frame 24, which spans the cart body from side to side so that the ends of the frame rest on the

22 and 23, according to the length of the bags, with the bag mouth between the frame and the rails.

: The frame is placed around the bag mouth 45 and the latter is extended well under the frame so that the downward tension or pull on the bag by the weight of the bag and its contents will draw the frame securelv down upon the bag mouth between the frame and the rails. The bags are of such length as not to rest upon or engage the bottom of the cart, but they are suspended free of said bottom by means of the cooperation of the bag frames and the rails. It will be seen that nearly the weight of the empty bags is sufficient to hold them in suspended and open position for filling; and that in the operation of bag filling the said clenching of the bag mouth is increased more and more as the bags become filled. When the bags in one end of the cart are filled, the top door of this end of the cart is closed and the companion door opened for filling the bags in the other end of the cart. The end door 15 being removed, the

rails for removal. Obviously one or more bags may be removed as they become filled, and the remaining bag or bags may be slid into filling position as desired.

The bag holding and distending frame, the rails and the door bail, hereinbefore described are applicable to boxes and casings, and as shown in Fig. 7, a pair of rails 27 are secured to the inner face of the sides of a street refuse box 28, having a hinged door 29, and a bail 80. The distending and supporting frame 31 cooperating with said rails, under the weight of the bag 32, and its contents clenches the bag mouth for suspending the bag.

Referring to Fig. 8, the bag holding and supporting elements are shown as for mail or grain bags or sacks, wherein the supporting rails 33 are composed of angle irons, secured at 84:. The distending and holding frames 36, are the same as the frames hereinbefore referred to, and are slidable on the rails with the bags into and out of filling position.

It will be seen that the same frictional grip is made on the bag mouth by the frame and rails in all the applications thereof as hereinbefore described, and the same results may be attained in the application of said elements to any other sacks or bags capable of being distended and suspended for filling.

In order to have the bail 19 make a tension hold on the door 15 and thereby keep the door securely closed, the ends of the bail are curved downwardly from the bail pintles 19 so as to form arc-shaped spring arms 19. The door being loosely held at the bottom in the door catches, downward pressure on the bail will produce a spring tension engagement of the bail with the door for holding the door in closed position.

Obviously the appliances are susceptible of various mechanical changes and variations, and we therefore do not confine ourselves with respect thereto, nor with respect to the size or material for carrying out the invention, nor do we wish to be understood as limiting the application of the grippin or clenching elements, or the shape thereof, but we reserve the right to make such changes and alterations therein and in the practical application thereof as may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a bag carrier, a bag hanging and tit body of the bag for tensionally suspending the rails and between the latter and the body the bag.

2. In a bag carrier, a bag suspending and bag mouth distenoling device comprising a plurality of rails spaced apart and fixed in pairs, a housing to Which the rails are secured in parallel position lengthwise the housing, and a plurality of independent rigid frames loosely fitting the bags and slidable on the rails and abutting the housing and having the bag mouth extending between the end members of each frame and Uopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the of the bags for tensionally suspending the bags.
