Description

W. G. WILLIAMS. ATTACHMENT FOR BAGS,
GRIPS, VALISES, AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED DEG. I, 1911.
Patented June 4,1912.
Inventor Attorneys WILLIAM G. WILLIAMS, OF VINITA, OKLAHOMA.
ATTACHMENT FOR BAGS, GRIPS, VALISES, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June a, 1912.
Application filed December 7, 1911. Serial No. 664,484.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vinita, in the count of Craig and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Bags, Grips, Valises, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for use in connection with valises, satchels, grips and the like, and oneof its objects is to provide a simple structure of this type which can be placed between the outer casing and the lining of the receptacle or which, if desired, can be placed inside of an old device, the structure, in either instance, operating to hold the walls of the receptacle properly supported under all conditions, thereby preventing the receptacle from collapsing, when partly or entirely empty.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure l is a perspective view of a valise having the present improvement combined therewith, a portion of the valise being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through the valise and the attachment therein. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bag having the present improvements combined therewith, a portion of the bag being broken away.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a base frame formed of heavy spring wire and so shaped and proportioned as to fit snugly upon the bottom of a valise A, bag B, or other receptacle with which the attachment is to be used. Side frames 2 extend upwardly from the sides of the base frame 1 and each of these side frames is formed in a single length of heavy spring wire, the terminal portions thereof being extended under the sides of the frame 1' and thence inwardly as at 3, said inand hold them taut.
wardly extending portions or arms termimating in eyes 4 which engage the end port ons of the frame 1. Under normal conditrons the side frames 2 preferably diverge upwardly from the frame 1, as shown in Fig. 3.
In using the device it is inserted into a receptacle such as a valise, bag or grip, so that the frame 1 will rest on the bottom thereof. The side frames 2 will thus bear laterally against thesides of the receptacle When the receptacle 1s unfastened, the side frames 2, acting as sprlngs, serve to open it automatically. To close the receptacle it is necessary to place the side frames 2 under stress by drawing them toward each other, these side frames thus acting to press constantly against the sides of the receptacle and to support said sides and prevent them from collapsing.
While the device herein described can be placed on the market as an article to be inserted into receptacles already in use, it is to be understood that, if desired, the said attachment can be arranged between the outer casing and the lining of the receptacle during the manufacture thereof. The attachment is of such character as not to interfere with the packing of the valise or other receptacle in which it is placed and is advantageous because it not only acts as a means for supporting the sides and holding said sides and the bottom properly stretched, but also because it serves to open the receptacle automatically when the same is unlocked.
Where the attachment is used in connection with a bag such as shown at B in Fi 4, the side frames 5 are preferably bent, as at 6, so as to conform with the contour of the sides of the bag.
What is claimed is 1. An attachment for valises, bags and the like, including a base frame, and spring side members extending from the sides of the base frame and normally diverging away from said frame.
2. An attachment for valises, bags, and the like, including a base, side frames upstanding from the sides of the base, each side frame being formed in a single length of spring wire having arms extending transversely under one of the sides of the base and terminating in eyes engaging the ends of the base. 7
3. The combination with a receptacle having flexible walls, of a base upon and extendin along the edge portions of the bottom 0 the receptacle, and spring side members upstanding from the base and along-the end and tog portions of the sides of the receptacle an constituting means for supporting said walls of the rece tacle and for antomatically opemng sai receptacle when unlocked.
4. In an article of manufacture a rein forcing and opening attachment for 'valises and the like, inclu ing.a base frame and spring side frames, each side frame being formed in a single length of spring wire havin its terminal portions looped about one si e of the base frame'and merging into 15 inwardly extending arms projecting under the frame, each am having a terminal eye en ging. one end of the base frame.
n testimony that I claim the foregoing as. my own, I have hereto aflixed my slgnature 20 in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM G. WILLIAMS.
