This invention relates to hat boxes such therefrom; to mount said garmenthanger on the cover or lid; to provide a garment hanger which may be removed from the hat box; to

adapt the support of the garments in the hat box to the contour of the hat box so as to 1 utilize the space to best advantage; to secure simplicity of construction and operation; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description. In the 'specific' embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the hat box preferably comprises a body or main receptacle 3 1 which may be of any suitable configuration but is usually substantially circular, in crosssection with a flattened portion upon which the box may rest diametrically opposite to a handle 2 by which the" box may be carried. The body of the box, around its open side, is provided with a projecting rim 3 of slightly less exterior diameter than the box. A cover 4 is hinged to the flattened portion of the body of the box and is adapted to close down over .said rim 3i Suitable locks or catches 5 are provided to retain the cover closed down uponthe body, as is usual in construction of hand luggage. Likewise, suitable means, such as ribbons or straps 6 are provided to limit the swinging open of the cover to substantially a position perpendicular to `its closed position. 'When thefhat box is being packed or unpacked,it is usually laid down n the position shown in Figure'l and the cover garments thereon but to opened so it assumes a`substantially upright orvertical position.

The cover 4 as usually employed in con nection with hat boxes constitutes a disc-like b ody portion 7 with a substantially circular 5 5 rim 8 projecting perpendicular from the edge of the body. Heretofore in packing hat boxes, the space within the bag provided by this rim has to be accounted for by packing an excess in the body of the bag, so that packing and closing the bag is made that much more dif'- cult. In the present invention I provide means for packing articles directly in the cov. er to utilize the space provided by the rim ,around the cover without having to pile the 55 goods first into the body of the" bag. I preferably mount a suitable bracket 9" on the'inside wall of the rim 8 of the cover, this bracket being positioned diametrically opposlte to the hinging of the cover so it will be at the uppermost part of the rim when the y cover is opened. While I have shown this bracket as permanently attached to the rim, I deem it within the scope of the invention to secure it otherwise, if found more desirable. This bracket preferably provides a suitable means for mounting thereon a garment hanger 10.' In the present showing I provide a loop 11 on the garment hanger and a hook 12 von the bracket, but "obviously here again the construction may be altered if found to be more desirable otherwise. The garment hanger provides a very ready means for applying Various garments both to the shoulders 13 thereof and to the cross-bar 14 extending between the lower ends of said shoulders 13. The shoulders 13 of the hanger v,10 are sloped downwardly away from the central support or loop 11 so as to not only properly support ollow, the same general direction of the curved rim so as to enable garments to be hung on the hanger 'and substantially lill the space between the hanger and the rim. After the garments are placed on the hanger, the hanger is inserted inthe cover of the hand bag and mounted onthe supporting bracket 9. The lower ends of the arments, if the same have not alreadybeen olded to adequate size,`may then be 'folded to lie 'within the cover and the lower portions of the garments are secured against swinging out from the cover by suitable retaining x'neans 15. As herein illustratedsaidretaining means comprises a pair of ribbons or 5 straps secured to opposite points of the cover neXt to the rim in a chordal direction and shown as adapted to be buttoned together at their inner ends to confine the garments bef tween said ribbons and the body of the cover.v I accordingly provide not only a simple, but

eincient means for packing goods within a cover of a hat box, andrender the space available for neat packing of the goods and retaining of them in position while the cover 35 is swung closed or opened.

. 'Obviously .detail changes and modifications may be made in the construction and use of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown or described, except as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
