1 Claim.

My invention relates to luggage and includes among its objects and advantages, improved and simplified means for eifecting the disposition of garments in traveling bags of the Gladstone or equivalent types, so as to avoid wrinkling thereof during transportation.

Fig. 1 is a transverse section through an open traveling bag, only a fragment of the left hand portion of the case being shown, illustrating the arrangement therein of apparatus according to this invention;

In the embodiment selected for illustration, the bag comprises hinged

10 and 12 connected together by hinge means such as the central portion 14 of the leather cover 16 itself. A reinforcement or back strip 18 is positioned above the hinge at 14 and a partition 20 may be connected as a iiap to the same point, to separate the contents of the two

portions

10 and 12 of the bag.

The frame for holding a garment hung upon a coat hanger is indicated as a whole by the reference numeral 22 and comprises a U-shaped metal body member 24 having legs 26 bridged at their outer ends by a cylindrical cross-piece 27. The inner ends of the legs are twisted so as to lie in a horizontal plane and are pivotally connected through the pintles 30 to the end reaches 32 of supporting strips 34. Each strip 34 extends down around the inside of the portion l0 and is hinged at its other end at 35 to the back strip 18, by removable pintles 37 so that the bag can be used with or without the attachment.

A U-shaped body member 38 similar to the body member 24 is pivotally connected at 40 to the body member 24 at an intermediate point of the legs 26. The arms 42 of the body 38 are bridged by a cylindrical cross-piece 44 at their free ends. Rosettes 46 are provided one at each end of each cylindrical cross-piece, to hold the cross-pieces spaced from the bottom of the portion 10, as shown in the full line position in Fig. 1. The arms 42 and their pivots are so located that the cross-pieces are equally spaced from the opposite side Walls of the portion 10, in the full line portion of Fig. 1. Y

Braces 52, hinged intermediate their lengths at 54, are positioned at each side of the frame 22 and are pivoted at their ends to the legs 26 and to the supporting strips 34.

To insert a garment in the bag the parts are moved from the full line position of Fig. 1 by rst raising the outer end of the frame 22 to the dotted line position. In this position the body member 38 is made accessible, and while the frame 22 is held in the vertical position by the braces 52, the body 38 is lifted to the dotted line position by swinging the body 38 upon its pivots 40.

With the parts in the dotted line position of- Fig. l, a coat or other garment 50 may be placed on the garment hanger 48 and the hook of the garment hanger passed under the cross-piece 44 to engage the cross-piece 27. As soon as the hook is in position the body 38 is released and swung to its lowered position. This presses the garment down smoothly with a fold in its midportion and its lower portion may be smoothly disposed in the bottom of the bag section 10. The lowering of the frame 22 to its full line position then completes the folding around the cross-piece 44 and brings the upper portion of the garment down fiat and smooth on top of the lower portion. After the garment is in place, a protecting partition 56 may be laid on top of it, to separate and protect the garment from the contents of the case, and fastened in place by tabs 58 on the body 26 attachable by snap fasteners 60. The corners of the partition 56 overlie the rosettes 46 to space the partition from the bottom of the container to prevent crushing the garment by the contents of the case subsequently placed upon the partition.

Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain my invention that others may, by applying knowledge current at the time of application of such knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.

I claim:

The combination with a container comprising two sections hingedly connected together, of a first U-shaped frame having the ends of its legs pivoted in one of the sections and remote from the hinge for rotation about an axis parallel with the hinge, holder means associated with the bight of said first frame for receiving and holding one end of a garment, a second U- shaped frame having the ends of its legs pivoted to the mid-points of the legs of the first frame, a garment-folding roller associated with the bight of said second frame, the legs of said second frame being substantially half as long as the legs of said rst frame, whereby the bight of the first frame limits the movement of the second frame, and enlargements at the ends of the bights of both frames for guiding garments into place and for engaging all four corners of the bottom of the section into which the frames are folded, to hold both frames spaced from said bottom.
