The present invention relates to traveling bags, and has for its object the provision of a novel and improved traveling bag in which mens suits or other garments may be carried 5 without being wrinkled. Another object of the invention is the provision of a wardrobe traveling bag adapted to accommodate a suit of clothes'or other garments as above indicated, with an inclosed D compartment for shirts, collars and other articles. I

A further object is the provision of a traveling bag of the character indicated comprising a novel construction and assembly of the com- 5 ponent elements for purpose of utility.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the inventi on. resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the traveling bag opened up'or unfolded to receive a suit of clothes as shown in dotted lines.

The traveling bag comprises the sides 1 and top 2 connectedjby the flexible hinges 3, and the sides have the bottom portions 4 and I end walls 5 which fit together edge to edge 5 when the bag is closed. Other suitable hinges may be used in lieu of the hinges 3, and the bag or case may be made of wood, sheet metal,

leather orother suitable material or combination of materials.

The top 2 has end plates 6, preferably of sheet metal, which work in slots 7 in theend walls 5, whereby said plates strengthen the construction, as well as closing the spaces between the walls 5 when the bag is opened 5 or unfolded, as seen in Fig. 1. L

The plates 6 have arcuate slots 8 curved around the hinge axes, and clamping bolts 9 or other suitable elements extend through the walls 5 and slots 8 to assist in guiding the sides 1 for swinging movement, as well as compartment and holding it in place.

- A suitable handle 16 is provided on-the limiting the opening movement of the bag when the sides and top are moved into a common plane. Bolts are preferably used having thumb nuts thereon which may be ti htened when the bag is unfolded, to hold theiiag rigid in open position. The adjacent edges of the sides 1 and top 2 are spaced apart, with the flexible hinge portions 3 between them, to enable the sides and top to be swung into a common plane, as seen in Fig. 1, which would not be possible by the use of hinges working on fixed axes, in view of the limitation of movement of the bolts 9 in the slots 8 through less than one-quarter of a circle. The corners of the endwalls 5 and plates 6 are rounded to accommodate the hinge portions 3 when the bag is closed.

A garment hanger 11 may be suspended from a hook, nail ,or other supporting element 12 from one of the bottom portions 4, when the unfolded bag is in upright position, as seen as in Fig. 1, or the opened bag may be laid on a table, on the floor or other surface. A suit of 010 hes or other garment, or several garments, may thus be conveniently suspended within the unfolded bag so as to lie against the sides 1.

A removable compartment 13 is provided "which fits partially within both sections of the bag, the end walls 5 having strips 14 or other means for conveniently supportingsthg a1 compartment has a hinged cover or door 15 which may be conveniently swung open for placing shirts, collars and other articles in the compartment.

After the garment or garments have been placed in the-unfolded bag, the compartment 13 is readily placed in either section of the bag. The bag is then folded, and this will fold the garment around the compartment 13;. When the bagis closed the garment or garments will be disposed within the U-, shaped space between the compartment 13 and thesides 1 and top 2 of the bag thereby preventing the garment from being wrinkled or crushed. *The compartment 13 thus serves to hold the garmentjn place adjacent to the sides and top of the bag.

with the portions l at the top and the portion 2 at the bottom, but it is preferable to use the bag as shown in Fig. 2, so that the garment will lay over the compartment 13.

When the bag is folded the plates 6 disappear within the slots 5 and are concealed from view.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A traveling bag comprising sides and a top having their edges spaced apart, flexible strips forming hinge connections between said sides and top, the sides having end walls and bottom portions adapted to move together, plates ,secured to the top and of a size to close the spaces between said end Walls when the sides are swung apart, said plates overlapping said endwalls in the closed and open positions of said sides, said plates having arcuate slots, and securing elements carried by said walls and working in said slots, said plates and end walls having rounded corners to accommodate said hinge connections when the bag is closed, said hinge connections permitting the sides and top to be swung into a common plane.

2. A traveling bag comprising sides and a top having their edges spaced apart, flexible strips forming hinge connections between said sides and top, the sides having end walls and bottom portions adapted to move together, plates secured to the top and of a size to close the spaces between said end walls when the sides are swung apart, said end walls having slots in which said plates move, said plates having arcuate slots, and clamping bolts carried by said end walls and extending through said arcuate slots, said plates and end walls having rounded corners to accommodate said hinge connections when the bag is closed, said hinge con-- nections permitting the sides and top to be swung into a common plane.
