WASTE-PAPER REOEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1910.
Application filed October 19, 1909. Serial No. 523,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aenor AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waste- Iaper Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to receptacles for waste paper &c., and are designed to aflord a device which may be quickly attached to or detached from a desk, table or other desired support; which may be swung into position so as to be conveniently accessible for use, and as readily swung back out of the way; and which will also fulfil the functions of a swinging hat rack and garnient support substantially as hereinafter set forth, the invention consisting of the specific construction and arrangement of parts described, an incidental feature being the provision and use of a bag or holder fitting as a lining within the receptacle and removable therefrom, for directly receiving, packing and transporting the waste.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a front elevation of a desk provided with my improved receptacle; Fig. 2, a top view of the front portion of a desk, illustrating diagrammatically the relation of parts horizontally and the swinging of the receptacle; Fig. 3, a section upon an enlarged scale taken upon plane of line 33 Fig. 1; Figs. 4, and 5, are sectional details taken upon plane of line l5, Fig. 3, showing different forms of holder linings.
I have herein shown my invention as utilized in connection with a desk, to the re quirements of which it is especially adapted, but it may also obviously be applied to a table or any other suitable support without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention.
The receptacle It, may be made of sheet metal, and is preferably although not necessarily of cylindrical form. It is provided with pivotal hooks 1", or equivalent means for engagement with loops or supporting devices d, on the desk D. The means of support are such that the receptacle R, may be swung back and forth horizontally. Thus, when mounted on the end of a desk D, as shown in the drawings, the person sitting at the desk can without leaving his seat and without inconvenience swing the receptacle forward into position for convenient use as indicated in solid lines in Fig. 2, and as readily swing the receptacle back beyond the front line of the desk out of the way as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and as shown in Fig. 1.
It is obvious that various mechanical expedients may be resorted to in mounting the receptacle R on the desk D or other support in such manner that said receptacle may be swung back and forth horizontally and I do not limit myself in this respect although the means shown are preferable on account of simplicity and also for the fact that the receptacle is thus rendered attachable to the support, and detachable therefrom for the purpose of emptying, cleaning, &c.
Combined with my swinging receptacle R is a hat and coat rack or support S, formed with a central hat rest it, at its upper extremity, and also with coat hooks c,'for the support of outer garments. This clothing support S, may be mounted either rigidly or detachably upon the receptacle. I prefer to make it removable and interchangeable. This may be accomplished in various ways, as by forming holes 1", in the flanged rim T of the receptacle for the reception of the legs 8, of the support S, said legs being long enough to extend down and rest upon the bottom flange a of the receptacle R, thus providing for the use of a clothing support of normal or maximum height even when removed from the receptacle R and placed upon the floor. The clothing support affords a convenient means of handling and manipulating the receptacle R, in swinging it back and forth, as well as for the temporary support of garments. The receptacle It, may be also provided with a bag or holder B, to act as a removable lining and in which the waste paper 620., may be collected for removal. The edges of this bag may be secured to an annular flange b, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4., or otherwise, the flange 6, being adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the receptacle and to be supported thereby. The holder or lining B, may be also made of tin or other sheet metal formed to fit snugly within the receptacle R, the flange 5, being formed integral with the holder as illustrated in Fig. 5.
In connection with the packing bag B, I contemplate the use of a packing weight W, suspended upon a pulley w, mounted in the upper part of the clothes support S, which in this case is made rectangular to admit of the raising and lowering of the weight into and from the bag B. By thus providing a packing bag, lining or holder B, the waste paper may be removed at any time from the receptacle without dismounting the latter from its support.
In order to relieve the pivotal supports 7, of undue strain the bottom of the receptacle is provided with caster legs is, which allow the receptacle to travel freely on the floor.
By my combination and arrangement of arts I economize space, insure a permanent relationship of parts, contribute to the convenience and comfort of the occupant of a desk or similar article, and obviate the necessity of the user leaving his seat or straining for the possession of the ordinary waste paper basket situated promiscuously on the floor. By providing the removable packing lining B, either in the form of a bag or flanged metallic cylinder, 1 also afford a convcnient means for collecting and storing the waste material as any number of these bags may be furnished and used interchangeably. The use of the packing weight also enables me to compress the paper into more compact form for storage or transportation.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the cylindrical receptacle R formed with the lower annular flange 1 and upper annular flange 1' formed with the recesses r, the support S, formed with the legs 8, fitting in the recesses r, and resting on the flange T and also formed with the hooks c, and rest h, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
