FEED-BAG AND SUPPORT THEREFOR.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. HAMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags and Supports Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in feed bags and supports therefor, the object of the invention being to provide an improved support for improved feed bags, the sup-port capable of quick attachment and detachment, and when detached may be folded so as to occupy but small space.

A further object is to provide an improved feed bag with a cover which enables the feed to be stored in the bag, and inclosed by the cover, and provide an improved folding supporting frame which may be folded across the bag, and the bag and its frame will then occupy but small space and can be stored in the wagon, ready for use when desired.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating my improvements adapted for use in connection with shafts. Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing the frame in folded position. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of connecting one of the frame rods to the bag supporting ring. Fig. 4, is a perspective view illustrating a modification in which my improvements are illustrated in connection with a vehicle tongue, and in which two feed bags are provided for a double team. Fig. 5, is a view in elevation of the tongue supporting prop, and Fig. 6, is an enlarged view of the tongue engaging ring and set screw.

1, represents my improved feed bag which is clamped between an inner ring 2, and an outer ring 3, and is provided with a cover 4, all of which is more fully set forth in my application for patent Serial No. 546,272 executed on even date herewith.

Referring to the construction set forth inv Figs. 1, and 2; 5, 5, represent two rods forming a supporting frame for the bagl. Each of these rods comprises two sections conlnected by hinges 6, and one end of each rod is bent as shown at 7, and positioned in a bracket 8,,secured to inner ring 2, the end of the rod being bent forming a lug 9, to prevent escape of the rod from the bracket. On the rods 5, near their free ends, upwardly projecting hooks 10, are provided, adapted to engage over the shafts 11, shown in dotted lines, while forks 12, on the rods engage the under faces of the shafts, and are provided with sharp spurs 13, to engage the shafts and prevent any accidental movement of the frame. One of these rods 5, has a strap 14, fixed thereto, and the purpose of this strap is to secure the frame in folded position, as seen in Fig. 2.

One great advantage of my folding frame is that it enables the frame to be folded over the bag and secured. This is especially desirable as it'permits the bag to be filled with the quantity of feed desired, the cover 4, then fastened in closed position, the frame rods 5, folded upon hinges 6, and swung around in brackets 8, so as to bring the rods side by side, and strap 14, is then positioned around the four sections of rods 5, to secure them in folded position.

Referring to the modification illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, where my improvements are shown, in connection with a tongue 15, horizontal rods 16, are connected to the brackets 8, of the respective bags, and are connected by hinge 17. One of these rods 16, adjacent hinge 17, has a depending lug 18, which is connected by a hinge 19, with an upright rod 20, and a hook and eye 21, is provided to secure the lug 18, in alinement with rod 20, when the device is in operative position. The lower end of upright rod 20, is fined or integral with a ring or collar 21 adapted to fit over the tongue 15. A set screw 22, is screwed through the lower member of collar 21, and is provided on its upper end with a swiveled head 23, having spurs 24, thereon to engage the under face of tongue 15, and securely clamp the device in place. 25, represents a tongue support which is preferably made in two sections, as shown, connected by hinge 26, and secured by hook and eye 27, in operative position. The upright 25, is secured upon a base 28, having depending spurs 29, thereon to prevent slipping, and the upper end of the device is provided with a fork 30, having spurs 31, therein to engage under the tongue. A strap 32, is secured to this tongue support, and the purpose of this strap is to secure the several parts of the feed bag support together. In other words, when the sections 16, and 20, are folded together on the bag side by side, the tongue support is also folded and placed beside the sections 16, and 20, when the strap 32, is passed around all of said sections'to secure them together, and the device will occupy but comparatively small space in the vehicle, ready for instant use.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a bag, clamping rings securing the bag between them,

and brackets secured to the inner ring, of

two rods, each pivotally secured in a bracket, and comprising two sections hinged together, said rods constructed to be folded and located side by side across the bag, and devices on the rods for securing them to vehicle shafts, substantially as described.

2. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a bag, clamping rings securing the bag between them, and brackets secured to the inner ring, of two rods, each pivotally secured in a bracket, and comprising two sections hinged together,

hooks on said rods adapted to engage over vehicle shafts, forks 011 said rods adapted to engage under vehicle shafts, and a strap secured to one of said rod sections, and adapted to secure the rod sections together in folded formation across the end of the bag, substantially as described.
