IRA F. REED, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
1 BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
Application filed April 12, 1913. Serial No. 760,684.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, IRA F. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohns town, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bag holders.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, cheaply constructed and eflicient device of this character which may be conveniently supported upon barrels, boxes or other like supports.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple and efiicientdevice of this character wherein the bag may be readily placed upon and held in proper position for filling and removed from the holder in a minimum length of time.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having a pivoted clamping band with means for pivotally connecting the band to a supporting band in such manner that the sack is permitted to hang over the sides of the supporting band and be held in position thereon by the clamping band.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line X--X, Fig. 3 with a supported bag.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an open-ended bag supporting band over which the upper edge of the bag is adapted to fold. Secured to the side of the band opposite the open ends is a substantially U-chaped bracket frame 2 whose legs extend above the upper edge of the band 1 and are bent back in the form of supporting hooks 3 which are adapted to engage over the edge of the barrel, box or other similar support and hold the supporting band 1 in horizontal position, the bracket 2 bearing against the sides of the barrel, box or other support. Secured to the inner side of the band immediately ad-' jacent the bracket 2 is a hook plate 4. having a rearwardly and downwardly bent hook 5 over which the sack is adapted to be engaged, as will be hereinafter described.
Secured to and depending from diametrically opposite sides of the band 1 are substantially U-shaped spring members 6, one leg of which is secured to the band 1 and the opposite leg of which has pivoted thereto a semi-circular clamping band 7 having a manipulating handle 8 arranged intermediate its ends and a pluralitv of clamping and limiting hooks 9 secured thereto and adapted to engage over the band 1, as will be readily understood. It will be noticed that the ends of'thc clamping band 7 are laterally offset, as shown at 10, so as to bring the clamping band close to the supporting band, whereby the folded edge of the sack will be bound against the band 1 and thereby prevented from slipping.
In practice, the sack is placed over the hook 5 and its upper edge folded over the band 1 extending down between the legs of the U-shaped springs 6. The clamping band is then thrown down into a plane common with the supporting band so as to bind the edges of the sack against the clamping band. The inwardly and downwardly turned hooks 9 also assist in clamping the sack to the supporting band and at the sametime limit the downward movement of the clamping band.
hat is claimed is A bag holder comprising a hooked bracket, an open-ended band secured thereto, substantially U-shaped springs depending from andeach having one leg secured at its terminal to the side of the band, a semi-circular clamping member adapted to extend over the open end of the supporting band and having its ends pivotally connected to the free ends of the springs, limiting and clamping hooks carried by the clamping member and adapted to engage over the supporting band, and a handle on the clamping member intermediate its ends.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRA F. REED.
