JOHN W. SAVAGE, OF SILVER, TEXAS.
BUCKLE CONNECTION.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. SAVAGE, citizen of the United States, residing at Silver, in the county of Coke and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles and has special reference to a connection including a group of buckles which is peculiarly adaptable to harness.
An object of this invention is to form a multiple device which may be adjustably carried upon the back strap of a harness to adjustably support the hip strap or straps across the back strap.
This invention has for another object the provision of a buckle which receives two straps in crossed relation midway of their ends and admits of the longitudinal adjustment of the straps through the buckle, and which will adjustably hold the ends of strap sections which are introduced through the opposite sides of the connection.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved buckle connection having crossed straps engaged through same. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the links employed, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the connection showing lateral strap sections secured thereto.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The body portion of the improved buckle is preferably formed of a casting which, referring to the drawings, comprises a pair of longitudinal and parallel spaced bars 10 which carry midway of their ends and in crossed relation thereto a pair of parallel and transverse bars 11. The bars 10 carry across their extremities end bars 12 while the bars 11 are provided across their extremities with side bars 18. This arrange- Speeification of Letters Patent.

ment of the bars provides a body having a central rectangular frame with end and side loops.
The end loops of the body are provided with links 14 which are formed of lengths of heavy wire bent U-shaped and having their free ends overturned to form eyes 15 through which the central portions of the transverse bars 11 are passed. The eyes 15 thus form the hinged connection for the links 14 to admit them to swing into and out of the plane of the end loops. The side loops are provided with lateral links 16 which comprise small frames of substantially rectangular form and which are transversely bent at their central portions and provided with arcuate fingers 17. The links 16 are further provided centrally of their inner ends with depending lugs 16. The fingers 17 depend from the bent portions of the links 16 and engage about the central portions of the longitudinal bars 10 and against the inner sides of the transverse bars 11. This construction admits of the swinging of the links into the plane of the side loops.
The outer ends of the links 14 and 16 are provided with hinged bails 18. The bails 18 are each formed of a length of heavy wire which is turned over at its opposite ends to loosely engage the adjacent links from which the arms of the bail 18 depend through he surrounding loop. The outer ends of the arms of the bail 18 are then bent outwardly and upwardly to engage beneath the outer bar of the loops. The arms of the bail 18 are diverged to enlarge the outer end of the bail to prevent its passage upwardly through the loop. The end bars 12 and the side bars 13 are each provided with upwardly extending and rigid tongues 19 and 20 respectively.
In Figs. 1-4 of the drawings the improved buckle connection is disclosed as secured to a pair of cross straps 21 and 22. The strap 21 represents the back strap of a harness and terminates in a crupper 23, as is disclosed in Fig. 1. The strap 22 represents the hip strap and connects at its opposite ends with the traces of the harness, each of the straps 21 and 22 are provided with perforations or apertures 24 and 25 respectively. The back strap 21 is passed upwardly through one of the end bails 18 and over the upper face of the adjacent end bar 12, one of the openings 24 receives the tongue 15.) and holds the strap from longitudinal movement through the connection. The strap is further carried across the central portions of the transverse bars 11, and is passed outwardly through the connection over the opposite end bar and downwardly through the adjacent bail 18. The strap 21 is passed beneath the links l-land below the inner ends of the bails 18. The hip strap 22 is passed upwardly through the bails 18 at the opposite sides of the connection and beneath the links 16 and lugs 16. The strap 22 is preferably carried beneath the strap 21 at their intersecting portions and the tongues 20 are engaged upwardly through the openings 35 which are formed in the strap 22. From Figs. 1-ilit will be particularly observed that the lugs 16 rest upon upper face of the strap 21 and hold the same from looping upwardly midway between the links it.
The bails 18 hold the straps 21 and 29 over the tongues 15.) and 20, in conjunction with the links Li and 16 which are con nected to the bails and which engage to st aps at the opposite sides of the end bars 12 and side bars 13. When a pressure is exerted upon the straps outwardly of the bails 18 to raise the straps out of engagement with the tongues 19 and 20, the bails 18 r ck against the under faces of the end and side bars 12 and 13 and draw the outer ends of the links l l and 16 downwardly againstthe upper faces of the straps. This action causes the links to bind against the straps and to prevent the upward movement of the same from the tongues 19 and 20. To remove or adjust the straps 21 and 9 relative to the connection, the portions of the straps which pass over the end and side bars 12 and 13 must be looped upwardly to free the adjacent tongue whereupon the strap may be carried through the links and bails.
in Fig. (3 the buckle connection is disclosed supporting a back strap 26 and a trace strap 27. The trace strap 27 com prises two sections which are looped over the side bars 13 to independently secure the sections to the buckle. The returned portions of the sections 27 engage against the under sides or the sections, and the tongues 20 pass through the two thicknesses of the straps.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A buckle including a body having a central rectangular frame and oppositely extending loops, clamping links pivotally mounted upon the frame to swing within the loops, retaining bails carried upon the outer ends of said hnks and passing through the loops, and tongues formed upon the outer ends of the loops.
2. A buckle including a body having end and side loops, clamping links hinged upon the central portion of the body to swing within the loops, retaining bails pivotally mounted upon the links and having their outer ends enlarged to prevent the passage of the same upwardly through the loops, and tongues formed upon the upper faces and at the outer ends of the loops.
3. A buckle including a body having end loops and side loops, U-shaped clamping links hinged within the end loops, retaining bails pivoted to the outer ends of the links and passing downwardly through the end loops, said bails being curved outwardly and upwardly about the end loops, and lateral clamping links of rectangular form pivotally mounted in the side loops and having holding lugs depending from their inner ends, retaining bails carried by the lateral links and extending downwardly and outwardly about the side bars-of the loops, and tongues carried upon the outer bars of said end and said side loops.
-l. it buckle including a body having end and side loops, clamping links hingedly mounted in the loops, retaining bails pivotally connected to the links and passing downwardly and outwardly through the loops, tongues carried by the loops, and holding lugs depending from the inner ends of the side links.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. SAVAGE.
