Specification of: Letters Patent.
-Patented Oct. 2a, 1918.
Application filed. January 26, 1918. Serial No. 213,983. 1
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEMnIn HILLMAN, citizen of the United States, residing atSan Antonio, in the county of Bexarand State of TeX-as,have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Cover Holders, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps and is especially designed for clamping the covers or clothes upon a bed.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for preventing the accidental displacement of bed clothes by the use of clamping members detachably secured above and below the mat tress, the particular novelty residing in the form of clamping members, which is manufactured from a single piece of material and bent to provide a series of parallel engagin edges adapted to be disposed transversely o the bed and in contact with the clothes or covers.
The invention also includes the particular manner of connecting edges of the opposed clamp members so as to adapt them to covers of different thicknesses, without the necessity of complicating and annoying adjustments.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed equipped with the improved cover holder or clamp,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the end of the mattress to which the clamp is applied, the section being taken transversely through the clamp,
' Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken transversely through the mattress and longitudinally through the clamping members,
Fig. 1 is an enlarged side elevation of the lower end of the mattress with the clamp in position thereon,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the clamping members detached,
Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blank from which the clamping member is formed, and
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing one of the flexible connecting elements of one of the clamping members.
Referring more specifically to the draw ings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to a bed which includes the mattress 10, a top spread 12.
The invention 7201 86 GIIIbOClIQS a pair of quilt or comfort 11 and the clamping members or bars 13 and 14, the
former beingydisposed transversely beneath the bed and'in contact with the mattress 10, while the latter occupies the same relative position upon the upper side of the mattress and in contact with the top spread 12. The
clamping bar 14 is formed from a single piece of material, preferably light sheet metal and is bent to form engaging edges 15, which are formed by the side flanges 16,
those flanges extending throughout the length of the bar. Formed intermediate the connecting edges 15 are parallel engaging edges 17, which are formed by corrugating the bar. This also serves to strengthen the bar and permits of its being manufactured of a light material. Located at each end of the bar are hooks 18, there being one of these hooks at each corner of the bar. They are formed by provided extensions 19, which are bent at right angles, the extensions being further bent upon themselves as shown at 20.
The bar 13 is identical in construction with the bar 14, except that the extensions 21 of the former are bent at right angles and are further folded inwardly upon themselves to form eyes 22. The eyes 22 have secured therein a flexible element in the form of a chain 23 formed of elongated links, so that when the clamping bars 13 and 14 are in position any one of these links may engage over one of the hooks 18 to hold the bars against accidental displacement. In this form of connecting means provision is made for clamping the bars upon the bed so as to hold the covers thereon, the difference in the thickness of the covers requiring no complicated or annoying adjustment of the clamp, it being only necessary to engage the links of the chain over the hooks 18.
The invention as above disclosed provides a simple and inexpensive device which may be arranged transversely above and below the mattress and near the foot thereof for securely holding the bed covers in position and preventing their being pulled upward or disarranged accidentally by the occupant of the bed. As the clamping bars contact directly with the bed covers and the under surface of the mattress they act to hold the covers without being in any manner secured to the bedstead, thereby permitting of the use of the device upon a cot or other bed, not having a foot board or side rail, as Well as upon the ordinary bedstead.
It is thought When the foregoing descrip tion is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent and that a further description is unnecessary.
Having described the invention, What is claimed is 1. A bed clothes clamp comprising a pair of bars'disposed transversely across the bed above and beneath the mattress, each of said bars being bent to form longitudinally ex* tending engaging edges adapted to extend throughout the Width: of the bedand intermediate engagingand strengthening; ribs and flexible elements detachably connecting the bars at each of their ends.
2. A bed clothes clamp comprising a pair of bars disposed transversely across the bed above and beneath the mattress, each of said bars being formed .from a single piece of material and bent to provide longitudinally extending side and intermediate engaging edges adapted to extend throughout the width of the bed and hooks formed at each end of said bars and flexible elements engaging said hooks and detachably connecting the bars.
In. testimony whereof I aflixmy signature.
