SHEET FOR BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 738,674, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed February 5, 1902. Serial No. 92,655. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELINA GRAITAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston,
county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheetsfor Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sheets for beds.
The object of the present invention is to provide'an improved and novel form of sheet for beds which can be rapidly and easily placed in position on the bed and will present a smooth appearance and be practically devoid of wrinkles, thereby making it more I 5 comfortable for the sleeper, and especially for elderly persons and children, while also obviating detachment of the sheet from the bottom of the bed-that is, at the foot thereof.
Having the foregoing object in view, the
zo invention consists of an improved and novel sheet for beds, as fully described hereinafter and set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the upper sheet as it would appear in position on the lower sheet and mattress; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the upper and lower sheets on a mattress;
Fig. 3, a cross-section thereof; Fig. 4;, a detail of the corner fastening of the lower sheet; Fig. 5, a detail showing the corner-fastening for the upper sheet or for the lower sheetwhen the draw-strings are not employed;
Fig. 6, a detail showing how coverings can be used for the attached ends of the draw-strings of Fig. 4; Fig. 7, adetail of the blank of the upper sheet; Fig.8, a detail of the blank of the lower sheet, and Fig. 9 a detail of a modifled corner-fastening for the upper sheet.
Reference will first be made to the form assumed by the lower sheet-that is, the one which is immediately on the top of the mattress. The material is ordinary sheeting, and when initially out prior to connection at the ends of the flaps it has the appearance shown in Fig. 8, where dotted lines indicate the lines along which the flaps fold. The
body of the sheet, or the part which lies on the mattress, is shown at l,while 2 and 3 are the side flaps andeand 5 the head and foot flaps. It will be observed that the side flaps 2 and 3 are considerably broader than the head and foot flaps, though this is not absolutely necessary, as all the flaps could be of the same width, the object being to have the flaps of sufficient width to hold the sheet on 5 5 the mattress against both longitudinal and transverse displacement. The sheet as actually ready for use has the ends of the side flaps sewed to the ends of the head and foot flaps at 6, as shown in Figs. 4:, 5, and 6. For invalids and children it is desirable to apply at two or more corners of the sheet the draw-strings 7, one being attached to a side flap at 8 and the other attached to the head or foot fiap at 9. These draw-strings are used in addition to the sewing together of the ends of the side and head and foot flaps,andwhen the draw-strings are tied together after being drawn up properly the sheet will have an additional means for holding it on the mattress. Whether the draw-strings are used or dispensed with,it will be observed that the sheet is made of such size that it will constitute a sort of top case for the mattress, as the side flaps lie against the sides of the mattress, the head and foot flaps 75 against the head and foot of the mattress, and the corners of the mattress are received into the pockets formed at the corners of the sheet by the connection at those points of the respective flaps with each other. I am thus enabled toprovide a lower sheet which forms a perfectly secure covering for the mattress and which cannot become wrinkled or pulled up from the bottom or displaced laterally at the sides, and, further, all tucking of the sheet 85 around the mattress when making up the bed is rendered unnecessary, as the sheet fits the mattress and simply has to be slipped over it, (though tightened by the draW-stringif nec= essary,) thereby saving much time and work. Referring now to the upper sheet, which is shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 9, the sheet when out out appears as shown in Fig. 7, where 2 and 3 are the side flaps and 5 the foot-flap, no head-flap being used, as the sheet, likeordinary upper sheets, is loose at the top or head end. The ends of the side and foot flaps are sewed together at 6, as shown in Figs. lor 6, for ordinary purposes, and the sheet is thus provided with pockets at its lower corners, mo
which can be readily made to fit over the mattress and lower sheet, while the side flaps 2 and 3 will fall gracefully at the sides of the mattress and will fold along the dotted lines shown in the drawings.
As shown in Fig. 9, I sometimes prefer to dispense with the sewing of the ends of the side and foot flaps of the upper sheet and to employ draw-strings 10 and 11 on the side and foot flaps, leaving the said flaps open at the corners and drawing them together as desired and securing them by using the draw-strings.
I am aware that many changes might be rea sorted to in carrying out my invention without departing from it, and I do not limit myself, therefore, to the precise forms shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to all such changes as come within the spirit and scope of my invention. I also desire it understood that the invention can be used in connection with blankets, quilts, and the like by sewing their lower 'ends.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a mattress, of aremovable sheet for the top of the mattress, said sheet having depending side flaps and a depending end flap lying against the sides and end of the mattress, means connecting the ends of said side flaps and end flap together to form pockets adapted to receive corners of themattress, and draw-strings at said pockets adapted for contracting them.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
, DELINA GRATTAN.
