UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CECELIA A. VHITING, OF TAOOMA, VASI-IINGTON.
MATTRESS-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 679,656, dated July 30, 1901. Application filed September 17, 1900. Serial No. 30,356. (No model.)
To all wiz/0m, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CEOELIA A. WHITING, (post-office address 704 Q street, Tacoma, Pierce county, Washingtom) a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVIattress-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mattress-holders, and particularly to devices for application to a mattress for holding it in proper shape when in use.
It consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. v
In the accompanyingr drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved mattress-holder. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section through a mattress having one of my improved holders applied thereto.
My invention is designed to be applied to mattresses so as to hold the same from spreading too much when in use and for preventing the edges of the mattress from falling over the sides of a bed, and is particularly useful in connection with iron bedsteads, in which the sides do not extend upwardly, so as to assist in holding the mattress in position.
In embodying my invention in practical form I preferablyemploy two strips l 1, which may be made of metal, wood, or like material,
or may be made of suitable webbing or other stiff fabric. The pieces l 1 are preferably made approximately the same length and height of a mattress and are adapted to be ar ranged along each edge of the same. These side pieces l l are held in position against the edges of the mattress by means of flexible straps or strips of webbing, as 2 2, which preferably pass around the sides of the strips l 1 and are held in place with respect thereto by means of loops or bands 8 3, applied to the sides of said pieces. The flexible straps or bands 2 are preferably adjustable, being provided with a buckle, as 4, or any other suitable adjusting means whereby the length of the side straps may be increased or diminished.
In applying the holder to the mattress the buckles 4 are loosened and the side pieces are arranged along the side edges of the mattress. The webbin gs 2 are then passed through the loops 3 on the pieces 1, and the buckles 4 are tightened to hold the strips snugly against the edge of the mattress. The buckles of course should not be drawn so tight as to cause the mattress to bulge out of its normal position at any point.
It will be seen that by the use of such a device the edges of the mattress may be always kept within suitable bounds and cannot spread or hang over the edges of the bed upon which the mattress is used. This will prevent the mattress from getting out of shape and will always hold it in such a compact form as to make a comfortable yielding surface upon which to reline.
A mattress-holder of this kind will be found very useful upon bedsteads, such as iron bedsteads, which have no sides to engage the edges of the mattress and assisting in holding it in position. It will of course be apparent that it will be very useful on bedsteads of all kinds, no matter how high the sides.
Having thus described my invent-ion,what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. Means for the prevention of lateral spreading of stuffed mattresses, comprising pieces of rigid material adapted to be laid against the sides of the mattress, said pieces being of the length of the mattress and of a height equal to the thickness of the mattress, flexible connections between said side pieces adapted to pass over and under the mattress, and means for adjusting the length of said connections, substantially as described.
2. Means for preventing the lateral spreading of a stuffed mattress, comprising pieces of rigid material of the length of the mattress and of a height equal to the thickness thereof, laid against the sides of the mattress, flexible connections between the side pieces passing over and under the mattress, means for adj listing the extent of said connections whereneetions on the side pieces, substantially as l by the side pieces may be adapted to mat- Witnesses:
described. 1o
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
