Description

P 1951 G. J. ARLISS 2,567,047
BED GUARD Filed Aug. 23, 1946 INVENTOR. George J. Ar/iss BYXW ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 4, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application August 23, 1946, Serial No. 692,571
3 Claims.
My improvement pertains to improved guards adapted to be mounted on the sideboards of a bed, one on each side so as to prevent children reclining in the bed from falling out. Although in general, guards of this kind are not new, the one developed by me has certain novel features and advantages which make the guard practical, efiicient and very easy to install in place or remove from the bed to which it is applied. The guard is made so as to be used in combination with a bed, and, to be adapted for that specific purpose, it has certain structural innovations not shown in any other invention of this kind.
I shall now describe my improvement with respect to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bed with my side guards mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my guard on line 2-2 in Fig. 1, the view including a part of the bed shown therein.
Fig. 3 i a perspective view of a part of the guard to disclose the details of its construction.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
For the purpose of illustrating the manner of using the guards I am showing them mounted on bed 10. The bed, includes end panel II and i2, resting on integrally formed legs l3 and I4, respectively, and two side boards l5, connected to the panels in the manner generally used in construction of beds.
Afiixed to each side board l5 along its lower edge on the inner side with respect to the bed, is a strip it its purpose being to support the frame I! of bed springs, indicated by numeral [8. Numeral l9 indicates a mattress on top of the springs.
All the above mentioned details pertain to a conventional bed to which my guards may be applied.
A guard of my construction, generally indicated by numeral 20, consists of two post 2! spaced from each other and of a suitable grill work between said posts, the grill work in this case consisting of two parallel bars 22 and 23, respectively, and a plurality of vertical rungs 24. Thi is only suggestive and may be substituted by some other element, such as a screen, a perforated board, a basket Weave, etc. The inventive features of the guard lies in the formation of the lower end of each post which is split by a vertical slot 25 into two legs, a long one 26 and a shorter one 21. The width of the slot corresponds to the thickness of the individual sideboards l5 so that the respective board may fit into said slot as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The shorter leg of the post is intended to rest on strip [6, and the longer leg provided with a rubber tip 28, rests on the floor supporting the bed. Thus the guard is partly supported by the bed and partly by the floor, acquiring steadiness beyond that supplied by the bed; alone, while the slot formation of the end posts of the guard, assure a firm attachment to the bed itself. No screws, braces or clamps are used, and thus the danger that the screws or clamps may become unloosened, is obviated. As for the mounting of the guards in place, all that i needed is to lower each guard over the side board of the bed allowing the board to enter the slot in the end posts. All that is needed to remove the guards is to lift them out.
It will be obvious that some changes may be made in the structure of my guard without deviating from the inventive principle disclosed herein. What I, therefore, wish to claim i as follows:
1. In combination with a bed having two sideboards, each of which is equipped with a lateral strip along its length for support of bed springs, a guard applicable to one of said side-boards, said guard including two vertical posts spaced from each other, a grill work between said posts but above the top of the side board to which the guard is applied, the lower portion of each post being divided by a vertical slot into two legs bearing frictionally against the respective side-board from the opposite sides, one of the legs resting on the ground and the other one, being shorter, resting on the lateral strip of the board to which the guard is applied.
2. In combination with a bed having two sideboards, each of which is equipped with an inwardly projecting horizontal strip at the lower portion thereof, a guard for application to one side board, said guard including two vertical posts and an intermediate openwork structure disposed between said posts above the level of the respective side-board, each post having a vertical slot intermediate its length, said slot extending downwardly and resulting in the formation of two legs, one on the outside of the said board and reaching to the ground, the other on the inside and resting on the lateral strip of the sideboard to which the guard is applied, the two legs being in a frictional contact with the side-board from opposite sides thereof.
3. In combination with a bed having two sideboards, each of which is equipped with a horizontal strip on the inner side of said board, a
guard for application to one of said side-boards, said guard including two vertical end posts and an intermediate structure disposed between said posts above the level of the side-board to which the guard is applied, each post having a vertical slot intermediate its length, said slot extending downwardly and resulting in the formation of two legs, one on the outside of the said board and reaching to the ground, the other on the inside and resting on the lateral strip of the side-board to which the guard is applied, the two legs being in a frictional contact with the side-board from opposite sides thereof.
