BEDsTEAD lin/enter Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UETED STATE anni TNT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds, and more particularly, to a bed having a cabinet structure formed in its lower portion for slidably mounting a plurality of drawers therein and in which the bed accessories, such as sheets, blankets, and the like, may be stored for convenient use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a dust-proof platform supported on the inside of the bed to cover the top of the drawers and on which the bed springs and mattress are supported.
A. still `further object of the invention is to provide a sectional cabinet bed of this character whereby the head, foot and side boards of the bed may Toe detachably connected to each other for convenient shipping and handling purposes.
Afstill further object is to provide an article of furniture of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherewise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective View with parts broken away and shown in sections.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on a line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view cf one corner of the bed and showing the interlocking connections for the side boards.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective View of one of the side boards and showing the ends of the interlocking rails.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of one side of the bed.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the head board of a cabinet while a foot board is shown at E and side boards at l. The foot board Ei and side boards l are shown of substantially uniform height, while the head board rises to a height suostantially above the upper edges of the foot and side boards. The ends of the head and foot boards 5 and 6 are curved, as shown at 8, to eX- tend in the vertical plane of the side boards l' if of similar rails E2 secured to the sides of the side boards l. The ends of the rails l2 are bent downwardly and inwardly, ,as shown at I3, to provide a lower flange in which the keyhole slots ll are also formed to strengthen the inter-locking engagement with the headed keys or tongues l5.
The head and foot boards and the side boards are connected to each other in interlocking engagement by a vertical movement of one relative to the other.
The upper rails 9 and l`2 are positioned below the upper edges of the foot and side boards S and as shown. in Figure l of the drawings, to provide a support for the edges of a platform li! preferably constructed` of tongue and grooved lumber, the platform serving as a support for the usual bed springs and mattress (not shown) The foot board t is formed with an opening l5, and the side boards l are formed with a plurality of openings I6 to receive sliding drawers Il and 28, respectively, the drawers being slidably supported on rails i9 secured to the inside of the foot and side boards. The tongue and grooved platform lli provides a dust-proof cover for the tops of the drawers, and the drawers are adapted to contain accessories for use with the bed, such as sheets, blankets, pillow cases, and the like.
The upper portion 2li of the head board 5 has f its side edges curved, as shown at El, in continuation of its lower curved corners and fluorescent lamps 22 are mounted vertically on the inner curved surfaces of the curved corners 2l`, the lamps being connected to a suitable current source (not shown).
Frein the foregoing it will be apparent that the head, foot and side boards of the bed may be easily and quickly separated from each other, and the platform I4 is loosely supported on the rails l5 and i2 to facilitate convenient shipping and handling of the several parts of the bed.
It is believed that the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is susceptible of certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is:
1. A bed comprising a head board, a foot board and a pair of side boards, rails secured to the inner suracesiof each of said boards, said head and foot boards being curved at their ends to extend in the Vertical plane of the side boards and in end-to-end engagement therewith, interlocking means between the rails of the head and foot boards with the rails of the side boards, and a dust-proof platform supported on said rails and adapted to support a bed spring and mattress thereon.
2. A bed comprising a head board, a foot board and a pair of side boards, rails secured to the inner surfaces of each of said boards,` said head and foot boards being curved at their `ends to extend in the vertical plane of the side boards and in end-to-end engagement therewith, intern locking means between the railsof the headtand tfoot boards with the rails` of theside boards, a
Vdust-,proof platform supported on said rails and adapted to support a bed spring and mattress thereon, said head board having a portion extending upwardly above said side boards providing inwardly curved lamp shields, said curved shields being curved in the aro of the lower corners of the head board.
` 3. A bedstead comprising a head board, a foot board, and a pair of plane side boards, said head 2 board and footboard being curved at their ends to provide vertical end edges facing the ends of said plane side boards, rails mounted along the inward sides of said side boards and terminating at the ends thereof, rails mounted along the inward sides of said head board and footboard, and having end portions conforming in curvature to the curved ends of said head board and footboard and projecting beyond the ends of the lll said 'plane'side boards, rails mounted along the inward sides et said side boards and terminating at the ends thereof, rails mounted along the inward sides of said head board and footboard, and having end portions conforming in curvature to the curved ends of said head board and footboard and projecting beyond the ends of the head board and ootboard, for engagement with the adjacent ends of the side board rails, and interlocking means removably securing the end portions of the head board and footboard rails to the ends of the sideboard rails,v all of said rails having substantially plane upper surfaces located in the saine horizontal plane on a level substantially below the upper edges-of the head board, ootboard, and side board; anda substantially im pericrate platform resting upon-the upper surfases of said rails and fitting the space between the head boardffootboard and side boards and for supporting a bed spring and vmattress in said space. e
