FACING-SLIP AND LABEL HOLDER.

Be it known that I, THOMAS W. GAINES, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county of Red River and State of Texas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Facing-Slip and Label Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in facing-slip and label holders to be used by mailing and postal clerks.

The object of the invention is to facilitate the handling of mail-matter by providing a convenient and readily-accessible means in applying the facing-slips to packages of mailmatter and to adapt such holders for placement with respect to a case or letter-box as to always have such slips and labels with the receptacle containing the letters to receive a slip corresponding with such mail-matter. Thus the holder will contain a label-indication of the point of destination and also a facing slip or slips to the postmaster at such point, and the whole will be attached to the box or compartment of a case containing the mail for the point corresponding with such label and slip.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in wl1ich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a small case with two of my improved devices in position to show their application. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofone of the slip and label holders removed from the case, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of one of the holders and also the case to which it is attached.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A indicates a case, which forms no part of the invention, but which is here shown for the purpose of better illustrating my improvements and their application to a letter box or holder.

13 indicates a holder for the facing-slips to be used. This holder is preferably made of tin or other sheet metal, and, while I have shown it as of a general rectangular form, it is obvious that it may be made in other suitable shapes, according to the shapes of the articles which it is designed to hold and the position it is to be placed in. This holder has a bottom a and the three vertical walls Z), the front wall being omitted, so as to leave an open front 0 for the insertion and removal of the facing-slips or other articles contained therein, and the forward edge of bottom aof said holderhas a cut-out portion (Z to permit the thumb or finger to be conveniently placed beneath the package of slips to remove one or more therefrom.

As a clamp or other means for fastening the box or holder to a letter box or case, I provide a loop on each of the side walls I), the upper branch of the loops being arranged at a height sufficiently above the upper edges of said side walls as to receive between them the wall of the box or case to which it is to be attached. For the sake of cheapness I form these attaching devices from wire, and in applying them I take apiece of wire of suflicient length to form a loop C with approximately parallel branches and secure the free end of the lower branch to the outer rear side of the side walls Z) by solder or other suitable means, as shown at c. The vertical branches f of these loops are extended slightly beyond the forward end of the holder 13, and the up per branches of the wire, which are directed rearwardly, are arranged at a suiiicient altitude above the upper edge of the side walls of the holder to permit the reception of the wall of a letter box or case to which said holders are to be attached. These wires being allowed to spring will adapt themselves to box-walls of different thicknesses and also render said holders readily attachable and detachable.

D indicates the label-holder, which may be of any ordinary construction, and is preferably composed of a strip of sheet-metal secured at its rear side to the vertical branches f, of wire, and has its face provided with longitudinal flanges or guides h to receive between them a suitable label E.

\Vhile I have shown my improvement applied to the top wall of a letter-box, yet it is obvious that it may be applied to the side walls, and when used on mail-boxes, as in cars, the wire will allow the holder to be attached to the slanting orinclined wall. These devices may be manufactured at a very smal expense and can be used in any place where a label-holder and receptacle for paper or other articles are desired to be kept in connection.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The combination, with a box orreceptacle adapted to contain cards or slips, of a clamp or the like for securing said holder to one of the Walls of aletter-boX, substantially as specified.
