LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,338, dated September 6, 1898.
Application filed October 6 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELEN A. AMEs, a citi zen of the United States, residing in Brook-. line, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Remailable Tag and Package-Securing Device, of which the following is a specification.
This is a contrivance adapted to be adhesively applied to a package and to receive a reversible tag, which tag has provision for being tied to the package and also for tying up securely the package itself. When the package is forwarded by the original sender, the tag is properly addressed, slipped into the sheath, which is adhesively secured to the package, and the cord which extends from the tag is used to tie around the package. Suitable provision is made for a postagestamp, directions to the postmaster, 850. After the package has been delivered in case it is to be returned the tag is withdrawn from its sheath and reversed, thus bringing into view the name of the sender, which is printed on the reverse side. The cord isagain used for tying up the package, which is then in condition for being remailed. The device is especially adapted for use by merchants who mail samples, &c., of merchandise, all or a portion of which are to be returned by the customer.
The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken from the rear. Fig. 3 is a view of the rear side of the tag removed. Fig. 4 is a rear perspective View of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a tag, to one end of which is attached a cord B, of sufficient length to securely tie up an ordinary mailable package. On one side, Fig. 1, of this tag are blank lines for an address and an inclosed space a for the stamp. On the other side, Fig. 3, is the name of the sender and an inclosed space ct for the postage-stamp.
G is a flat sheath provided with an open end at G and a rectangular opening at 0 large enough to exhibit the address contained Serial No- 654,214-.. (No model.)
in the sheath. At one end of the front side are directions to the postmaster, and at the upper portion of the same side are the words Reverse tag for remailing or words of similar import. The rear surface 0 of the sheath is coated with mucilage or other ad hesive substance. j
When the merchant desires to send out goods through the mail for inspection and subject to being returned, he sticks the rear side of the sheath 0 to the package, slips in the tag A with the address uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1, and ties up the package with the cord B, said cord'operatingto secure the tag to the package and hold the tag within the sheath, as well as to tie the package. The recipient or customer unfastens the cord,
thusuntying the package, and after examining the goods, if desiring to return more or less of them, reverses the tag, as in Fig. 3, and slips it into the sheath with the rear side (which contains the name of the merchant) uppermost, and then ties up the package as before and remails it.
In Fig. 4 the rear side of the sheath has an opening D, similar to the openingIO on the front side, such rear side being provided with an adhesive substance, as in Fig. 2.
Preferably suitable notches E are formed in the open end of the sheath for convenience in Withdrawing the tag and for accommodating the cord.
It will readily be seen that by means of this contrivance the return by the customer of the package is facilitated, as all the customer has to do is simply to reverse the tag, stamp it, and to tie the card extending from said tag around the package.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described combined remailable tag and package-securing device, consisting of the flat sheath 0 open at one edge and closed at the other edges, provided on its upper or outer side with the opening 0 and with suflicient surface around the edge of said opening for receiving directions to the postmaster and recipient, the rear or under side of said sheath being coated with adhesive substance whereby the same may be secured to the package; the reversible direction-tag A having provision on one side for the address of the recipient and with the other side having inscribed thereon the address of the sender, said tag being adapted to be inserted in and Withdrawn from the sheath; and the cord 13 secured to the outer end of said tag and of sufficient length to securely tie up the package to which the sheath is adhesively applied and thus secure the tag to the package and at the same time hold [0 it in position Within the sheath, substantially as described.
