To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN Arms, a citi zen of the United States, residing at St Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card or Label Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to card or label holders especially designed for usen'pon barrels or other receptacles used in shipping: solids or liquids, for holding the shipping label or card bearing the names and addresses of the consignor and consignee.

The object of the invention is to provide a card or label holder especially designed for use on beer kegs, shipping cases, baskets, etc., which is adapted to receive the card or label in such manner as to hold it securely from displacement, so that upon the return of the shipping receptacle from the consignee to the consignor proper credit for its return may be given.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple of construction, reliable and eflicient in use, adapted to be economically manufactured, and which may be used in a ready and convenient manner and without liability of displacement.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figs. 3 and a are front and rear views of the device detached. Fig. 5 is a view of a form of label which may be used in connection therewith.

In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a card or label holder 1 comprising a frame shown in the present instance as of oblong rectangular form, cast or stamped or made in any other suitable manner from. metal or other desired material. This frame has a main opening 2 for the display of the label and has its top bar provided with a longitudinal slot 3 for the insertion and with drawal of the label. The lower wall of this slot is formed by an enlarged portion 4 of the bar which projects outwardly beyond the face of the bar and is formed with a beveled rear surface 5 to provide an inclined chute. The backer rear face of the holder is rabbeted to form a recess 6 of proper size to recelve the card or label 7 which is preferably made of paper or other flexible mater al. This recess extends along the bottom and side bars of the holder outside the main opening 2 and also along the top bar of the holder, the inner wall of the recess terminating flush with the base of the lower offset portion'ofthe top bar; The slot 3 is thus arranged at an angle to the recess, requiring the card to be inserted and withdrawn at an angle and in a flexed condition so as to clear the upper wall of the slot, whereby when the card is fully inserted it will fully contact within the recess and thus be held from displacement.

The side bars of the holder are provided with openings 8 for the passage of suitable fastenings 9 to secure it to the keg or receptacle, and it will be observed that the rear faces of the bars are flush or lie in a common plane so that the holder will best snugly against the receptacle and hold the label in position without any possibility of loss or displacement. When it is desired to withdraw the label, this may be done by inserting a hooked tool or other device in the label through the opening 2 and bending or flexing the label so that the upper edge thereof will clear the upper wall of the recess and project into the slot, allowing it to be gripped and removed.

Any suitable type of label may be employed, according to the use to which it is to be put, but in Fig. 5 I have shown a form of label which may be adopted in shipping beer or other commodities. As shown, this label is provided with an upper space 10 to receive the name and address of the shipper or consignor, a lower space 11 to receive the name and address of the consignee, and one or more intervening spaces 12 to receive items relative to the character of the shipment or receptacle in which the shipment is made. After the receptacle has been emptied by the consignee, the name of the consignee may be stricken out by running lines therethrough and the name of the consignor allowed to remain as the correction address, or the card may be suitably worded so that both names may be allowed to remain and proper directions given to indicate to the railroad officials or others the destination point. The card will thus serve as a record of the shipment, as well as the return of the original package, thus enabling'the con-- signor to give proper credit to the consignee for the return of the package or container indicated by the card. By this means a proper record of all shipments and returns may be readily and conveniently kept.

I claim As a new and improved article of manufacture, a card or label holder formed of a single piece of material-and comprising a body of oblong rectangular form, said body being provided in its front Wall with a display opening of corresponding form and being rabloetedv on its rear face to provide a reoe'ss (if greater length and Width than said opening, the upper cross bar of the holder having a longitudinal slot corresponding in length with the recess and communicating with the upper portion thereof, the portion of said cross bar below said slot being enlarged and projecting outwardly beyond theface of the bar and having its rear surface beveled downwardly and inwardly to provide an inclined chute, substantially as described.
