SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,465, dated April 1, 1890.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS BERNARD CROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings and Ornaments for Hat- Bands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in .the devices for the fastening and ornamentation of hat-bands and it consists of such parts whereby the ends of the band will be securely held together and these ends kept smoothly in place against the side of the hat, the fastening device which secures the said ends in the one operation securely fastening the band to the hat, thereby facilitating the work on this part of the hat and at the same time providing a suitable ornamentation at this part of the hat-band, all of which I accomplish by the devices hereinafter fully describedand claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a hat provided with this fastening device. Fig. 2 shows a detailed view of the device shown in Fig. 1, somewhat enlarged. Fig. 3 shows a sectional view, the section being taken through X X, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a detailed View of the wire link. Fig. 5 shows a detailed view of the fastener.

The same numbers refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.

The number 8 denotes a hat that may be of any form and of silk, felt, straw, or any material, the band 9 being placed around the outside thereof, which is to be fastened and ornamented by the device in the following manner: the band 9 is placed around the hat in the usual manner in this case, where the fastener is to be used, the ends 10 thereof being turned under to present at this point a finished edge, these edges 10 being brought wholly or nearly together, as shown in. Figs. 2 and 3. To hold these ends 10 securely together and keep this part of the band pressed tightly against the side of the hat, there is placed at this union of the two ends of the band three or more separate wire links 11, which are so placed at this point of union that the said links 11 will span the ends of the hand. These links 'are each provided with eyes 12, formed at each end of the link and on opposite sides thereof, which are adapted to fall over the double part of the band that is formed by the turned-under edges thereof. I11 order to securely fasten the links 11 in this position, whereby they will press upon the ends of the band and smoothly hold them in position to the side of the hat, and at the same time securely fasten the band to the hat, a fastener 13 is employed, which is provided with a hemispherical head that is larger in diameter than the eye 12 in the link, the fastener having under the head thereof the needle-shaped prongs 14, one of these fasteners being provided for each eye of the links,

the said prongs 14 being passed through the eye 12 at each end of the link through the double part of the band thereunder and then through the material of the hat, these prongs being sufficiently long to pass through all these parts and with sufficient spare ends to the prongs to permit them to be clinched to the inner surface of the hat, as shown in Fig. 3, and thus securely fasten the ends of the band and in the same operation secure the band to the hat, providing an ornamentation for this part of the band and so tightly pressing the ends of the band to the side of the hat that they will not become displaced.

The head of the fastener may be made of any form, so that it will be of a larger size than the eye of the link. For afurtherdecoration of the hat-band, if it be desired, a bow or lapping piece may be placed over the joint of the two ends of the band and these parts secured to the hat by the device herein described, the prongs of the fastener passing through all the parts thereof and adding additional ornament thereto.

Having described myinvention in full and the manner of using, What I claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent,is--

The combination, with a hat and the band thereof, of a series of headed fastening devices passed through the hat-body and the band and clamped 011 the inside of said hatbody, and a series of links having eyes at each end crossing the ends of the hat-band and secured outside thereof directly under 10 the heads ofthe fastening devices, substantially as specified.
