'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CESAR SIMIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN H/,xT-swEA-rs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223, 177, dated December 30, 1879 application led October 27, 1879.
.To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that l, OJESAR SIMIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Sweat, of which the following is a speciication.
Figure l is a plan View of the interior of a hat, showing the sweat in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of a hat with the sweat in position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the sweat and hat. Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of the back of the sweat.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object ot' this invention is to provide a ventilatin g, elastic, and self-conforming sweat for a hat.
The invention consists of a sweat of leather or any other suitable material, in which are cut or stamped a number of connecting ventilating holes and slits for the admission of air about the head.
It consists, further, of an elastic strip or band secured on the back of the sweat, causing it (the sweat) to project from the hat and to conform or adaptitself to the shape of the head.
In the drawings, A represents the sweat, and a a series of' connected holes and slits made in it for ventilation, said holes and slits a extending along the front of the sweat and from its lower edge upward for about half its width.
The elastic band B extends laterally both ways behind and beyond the row ot' holes and slits7 and has its ends secured on the back of the sweat A in such a manner that when` the 'said sweat A is fastened in place in a hat, C, the said sweat is pressed outward by the elasticity ot' the band B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that air can pass through said holes and slits a, and so that the portion of the sweat A which is embraced by the band B may conform itself to the shape of the head.
Pasted or otherwise secured to the back of the sweat -A over the ventilated portion thereof, and covering the band B and assisting in holding it in place against the sweat, is a strip, D, of leather or other suitable material, that is provided with holes and slits a', corresponding with the holes and slits a. in the said sweat, the purpose of this strip D being to hold the band B throughout its length against the sweat A.
Besides permitting a free circulation ot' air tion of the sweat and making it conformable to theshape ot' the head.
l do not confine myself to the particular shape of holes and slits herein shown, nor to forming them solely in the front section of the sweat, for I propose in some instances to form Ventilating-holes throughout the whole length ot' the sweat, and also to attach to the back thereof anv elastic band and aholding-strip of corresponding'length.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the within-described hat-sweat A, made with a series of connected holes and slits, a, and an elastic band, B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A hat-sweat withvan elastic band secured ou its reverse side, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. ln combination with a hat-sweat perforated with holes and slits, an elastic band and an inner perforated strip, substantially as herein shown, and for the purposedescribed.
CESAR SIMIS.
