STRAW HAT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,1913.
Application led .Tuly 18, 1912. Serial No. 710,167.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it. known that I, Josnr VEIDER, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Prague-Lieben, Bohemia, Austria- Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw Hats, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide a straw hat which owing to the special arrangement of the inner edge of the brim on the one hand permits the hat to be worn more deeply and to tit more perfectly the head, thereby correcting the frequently observed disproportion between the dimensions of the hat and the size of the head or the width of t-he face, and at the same time avoiding the impression of an unpleasant disproportionate head covering. On the other hand the hat according to the present invention permits the arrangement of ventilating openings on such parts of the hat where ventilation can be effected in the mest etlicient and in a permanently secure manner. For this purpose the hat brim consists of two layers of straw plaiting tightly pressed against and connected with each other. The lower layer is at the inner edge sharply deflected toward the interior and upward so as to project into the hollow of the crown of the hat, and is then once more sharply deflected upward so as to continue into the inner tube that extends upward within the crown of the hat and serves for fastening the leather lining. This two-fold deflection of the straw plaiting connecting the inner tube to the lower layer of the brim results in the advantage that on the one hand the tube is held at a suitable distance (about l centimeter) from the interior edge of the crown of the hat and that the lower edge of the leather lining is placed at a higher level so that the hat now can be set lower down on t-he head. The inclined surface formed at the lower edge of the crown of the hat will remain free in all cases, and is therefore best suited for the arrangement of Ventilating holes opening into the wide space between the interior tube and the wall of the crown of the hat and allowing an unobstructed circulation of air in the space between the head and the hat.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a straw hat of this kind and Fig. 2 a cross section of the same.
The crown a of the hat is continued into the brim which is 'composed of two layers b and c tightly pressed against each other and firmly connected with each other at all points. These layers may be produced by folding or doubling the plaiting itself or the two layers may be made separately and then sewn together on the exterior edge of the brim. The lower layer c is at its entrance into the hollow of the crown of the hat sharply deflected upward as at d, is then extending upward at an angle (forming the interior strip and is then once more deflected upward at g to form the inner tube L'. This tube t extends upward into the hollow of the crown of the hat for `about 3 centimeters and owing to the length of the strip f is held at a distance of about 1 centimeter from the wall of the crown. The leather lining c' is fastened to the tube t and reaches downward to the edge g, which latter is at a higher level than the brim so that the hat can accordingly be worn lower down on the head. The inclined interior strip f is provided with h-les Ze which as they never bear against the head nor can be obturated by the hair, always allow the air to pass freely through the same and to circulate in the space between the head and the crown of the hat.
I claim- 1. A straw hat, comprising, in combina-v tion with the crown, a brim formed of two layers of straw plaiting, tightly pressed and secured together, the bottom layer being deflected inwardly and upwardly at a sharp angle and extending upwardly into the crown, so as to place the lower edge of the inner tubular portion of the hat at a higher level than the inner periphery of the brim.
2. A straw hat, having a brim formed of two closely connected layers of straw plaiting, t-he bottom layer being deflected v inwardly and upwardly at a sharp angle and extending upwardly into the crown of the hat, and provided in its inclined portion with Ventilating openings.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEF VEIDER.
