THEODORE WESTERMAN, .OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,462, dated May 2, 1893,
Application filed January 11,1893. Serial No. 458,005. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be itknown that I, THEODORE 'WESTERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hats, bonnets and the like and it consists of a hat having attached to its inside a metallic, perforated strip backed with cork, paste board or the like arranged to receive the point of the fastening pin and thus prevent the same from entering the hat itself.
It consists also in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross section of a ladys hat, showing my improvement attached thereto, the pin passing through the hat and having its point embedded in the combined metallic and cork plate or strip. Fig. 2 is a detailed view showing a front elevation of a portion of the hat body and also of the plate, to which the elastic band, securing the hat pin to the hat, is attached, and through which plate the pin passes. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, enlarged, of a perforated strip detached from the hat; Fig. 4 a cross section of the same, taken on the line 0c0c, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, o. represents the body of the hat, which may be of felt, straw, cloth or the like; I) is the inside lining of the hat. Between this lining b and the body a of the hat, and preferably on one side of the hat is placed a thin metallic strip a, havinga backing strip, d, of cork, felt, paste board, 850.
On the inside of the hat, opposite about the center of the strip 0, is secured by pins n, or in any suitable manner, a plate 6, preferably of thin metal having an eyelet hole f, which perforates the plate and the body of the hat a, all clearly shown in Fig. 2. Through this eyelet f the hat pin 9 is adapted to pass. The face of the strip 0 is provided with a number of perforations 19, extending through the metallic surface and adapted to guide the point of the pin g into and allow it to embed itself in the cork or similar elastic backing d.
I do not intend to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described as many modifications of the same can be made without departing from the spirit of my inven-- tion, but
What I do claim as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a hat, bonnet or the like, a strip united to the hat, said strip consisting of a layer of yielding substance faced with a perforated rigid strip and adapted to receive the point of the hat pin, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a hat, bonnet or the like, a strip of yielding material having a perforated metallic facing and secured to the inside of the hat, and an eyelet extending through the body of the hat opposite to the strip all arranged so that the hat pin is adapted to pass through said eyelet and the point of said pin to be embedded in said strip, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of January, 1893.
THEODORE WESTERMAN. Witnesses:
ALFRED GARTNER, HENRY E. EVERDING.
