SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,128, dated April 8, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM R. S. FLUOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and useful Clasp or Tying Device for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved fastening device for umbrellas; and it has for its object to provide a device of this kind which shall be simple in construction and which may be easily and effectually manipulated.

My invention consists of two similarly shaped parts or members adapted to be attached, respectively, .to the umbrella-cover and to the tying-strap and adapted to engage each other in the manner which will be here inafter fully described, and which will form a fiat fastening that will not make an objectionable lump in the case when slipped over the umbrella, as does the ring and button clasp.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of an umbrella equipped with my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the two parts or members of my improved clasp. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the parts or members of the clasp in position to engage each other. Fig. at is a perspective view showing the members of the clasp engaging each other. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the members of the clasp provided with means for attaching them in position for operation.

Each of the parts or members of my improved clasp consists, primarily, of an approximately circular plate 1, cut or stamped so as to form the shank 2 of the T-head 3 at one end of the plate, and which shank is extended into and connected with the bent portion of a U-shaped head at the other end of the plate, the ends of said U-head forming tongues 4 4 adjacent to the said shank. The latter is provided witha bent portion or shoulder 5, by means of which the T-head 3 and the lower end of the shank are caused to lie in a plane slightly above the U-head and its tongues 4 4 and the upper portion of the shank.

The application of the fastening device as an umbrella-tie will be readily understood fromthe foregoing description when reference is had to Fig. 1 of the drawings. of the plates is firmly secured to the umbrellacover at the point at which the tying-strap is attached to the same, its T-head being outermost and free, and the T-head of the other plate is firmly secured at the outer end of the said tyi ng-strap with the U -h cad thereon free. The strap may then, when desired, be passed around the umbrella and the U-head of the plate at its outer end caused to engage the T-head of that which is secured to the umbrella-cover, as described.

While I have in the foregoing described my invention as being an umbrella-fastening I desire to state that it may be applied to other uses and purposes for which it may be found to be adapted-such as glove-fastenings and the like-without departing from my invention.
