Description

(No Model.)
J. B. NORTON.
BELT FASTBNER.
Patented Nov. 1, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BROWN NORTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BELT-F'ASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,427, dated November 1, 1887.
Application filed March 12. 1887. Serial No. 230,632.
T 0 all 1071,0112, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN BROWN NORTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the ends of a belt connected by lacing and provided with my in1- proved eyelets. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the eyelets before insertion. Fig. at is a similar view of a modified form of the same; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the belt and this form of eyelet, a lacing cord being admitted, as also in Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of belt-fasteners having a lacing strap or cord passed through eyelets in the ends of the belt, drawing the ends together; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of an eyelet, as hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 indicate the ends of the belt. 2 is the lac ing strap or eord, which is passed through the eyelets 3, which may be either round, Oblong, or any other suitable shape. These eyelets are inserted through perforations 4, punched in the strap or. belt, and one end of the eyelet is formed with a flange, 5, having a toothed or serrated edge, 6, projecting to ward the smooth end of the eyelet.
It will be seen that when the eyelet is inserted into the perforation in the belt and is clinched at its smooth end the serrations or teeth at the flanged end will enter the edges of the perforation and serve to hold the eyelet (Nu model.)
firmly in place, the serrated flange biting into the face of the belt around the edge of the perforation.
In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown a modification of the eyelet, in which a. collar, 7, having a serrated or toothed flange, 8, is placed upon the smooth end of the cyeletafter it has been inserted through the perforation, the smooth end of the eyelet being clinched over the upper flanged edge of the collar and forcing the teeth or serrations into the other side of the belt, the eyelet thus having teeth or serrations entering both sides of the belt. This eyelet may be used with other articles in which an eyelet is used Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and at all times the serrated flange or flanges will serve to hold the eyelet in place and preventits slipping out through the perforation by any severe strain upon it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of an eyelet having a flange at one end, formed with a serrated or toothed edge projecting inward, with a collar fitting upon the smooth end of the eyelet and having a similarly serrated or toothed flange, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a belt-fastener, the combination, with a belt having perforations at its ends, of eyelets inserted through the pcrforations and having flanges at one end formed with inwardlyprojectiug teeth or serrations entering the faces of the ends of the belt, and having collars provided with similar toothed or serrated flanges secured upon the smooth ends by the clinching of the same, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BROWVN NORTON.
