Description
M. SAVIT.
HAT PIN.
APPLIGATION FILED Hum, 1909.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909 3 he a 1 A @WM WW ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISADORE M. SAVIT, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
HAT-PIN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISADORE M. SAvIr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat pins, and it pertains to that class of ornamental pins, which are adapted to be used both for ornament and for holding a ladys hat in place when worn.
The construction of my invention is ex plained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is also a vertical section of a modified form; and Fig. 4. is a perspective view thereof, showing the head inclosing cover as it appears when it is being drawn and secured together around the pin.
Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
1 represents an ordinary hat pin provided with a hard metallic or composition head 2 of ordinary construction.
3 is a spherical ball which is preferably made of cork, wood, or other light material. In the preferred form, the ball 3 is made in two parts 4L and 5, substantially hemispherical in shape, when central cavities 6, 6, are formed in such parts for the reception of the head 2 of the pin. When this is done, the pin 1 is inserted centrally through the part 5 and forced down until the head 2 is brought into the cavity of such part, when the other hemispherical part 4 is placed against said head, as shown in Fig. 2, when said hemispherical parts i and 5 are permanently secured together by the fastening pins 7, 7. Vhen the parts 4 and 5 have thus been secured together, they are entirely surrounded bythe flexible fur like cover 8, which cover is pressed into a sack shape, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, when a gathering cord 9 is inserted backwardly and forwardly in a zigzag course through the gathered edges of the mouth of the sack shaped cover, as shown. lVhen this is done, the respective ends of the cord 9 are drawn and secured together around the pin 1, whereby the cover 8 is securely retained in place.
10 represents the fur of the cover which is caused by the convex shape of the interior Specification of Letters Patent.

to radiate in all directions around the central head 2, whereby the fastening cord 9 is entirely covered up and excluded from view. The pin 1, which is thus provided with a fur like covered head, is more especially adapted to be used for securing fur hats and caps to the head of the wearer, while the fur inclosing cover gives to the same a neat, rich, and ornamental appearance.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, the spherical member 11 is formed of a single piece and is provided on its upper side with a socket or recess 12 for the reception of the head 2, which is inserted in said socket, while the pin extends through the lower side of said member 11 and said pin is retained in place by the metallic clamping band 13, which is provided with an aperture 14: for the reception of the pin, while the ends of the clamping band are secured together be low the head 2 of the pin by the nail 15. When the member 11 is thus secured to the pin, the same is surrounded with the fur cover 8, the same as heretofore described in connection with Fig. 2. While I have referred to the part 8 as being a fur cover, I do not Wish to limit myself to the use of fur for such cover, as it is obvious that many imitations, of fur may be substituted therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a pin provided with a rigidlyaflixed head of ordinary construction, with an inclosing spherical shaped ball, means for securing said ball to said head, and a flexible inclosing cover having a fur like exterior surface.
2. The combination with a pin provided with a rigidly aflixed head of ordinary construction, with an inclosing spherical shaped ball, means for securing said ball to said head, and a flexible inclosing cover having a fur like exterior surface, said cover being sack shape in form and provided at its mouth with a gathering cord by which the mouth of the cover is drawn and secured together around said pin.
3. The combination with a pin provided with a rigidly affixed head of ordinary construction, with an inclosing spherical shaped ball formed in two hemispherical parts rigidly secured together around the head of said pin by transversely arranged In testimony whereof I aflix my signature fastening pins and an inclosing sack shaped in the presence of two Witnesses.
flexible cover having a fur like exterior surface the mouth of which is provided With a gathering cord inclosing and adapted to "be secured together around said pin, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
