J. KELLY. TRANSOM LIFTER.
Patented Jan. 21, 1890.
U I N 5:
Fig.1.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES KELLY, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWVARD DOUGHERTY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,680, dated January 21, 1890.
Application filed July 9, 1889. Serial No. 316,964- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom'Lifters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention refers to transom-lifters in which the power is applied to the journal of the transom; and it consists in a novel device the operating parts of which (except the knobpull) are concealed within the casing of the door or window, as inore fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which like letters represent like parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door-frame with transom, showing my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, of the transom and operatin g devices. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the lower part of the frame and operating devices. Fig. 4 is a View of the operatingknob, spindle, and locking-pin. Fig. 5 is a front View of the escutcheon-plate.
A represents the transom, and B its journals, one of which is suitably elongated, so as to engage with the operating-lever C. The operating-lever is attached at one end firmly to the transom-journal and at the other end by the bolt 0, on which it moves freely to the connecting-rod D. The lower end of the connecting-rod is suitably jointed at Z to one end of the spindle-lever L, the other end of which is firmly attached to the spindle Enear its rear end. The rear end of the spindle E rests in the socket M, and its front end passes through the casing and the opening I in the escutcheon-plate H and terminates in the knob F. r
In the shield f of the knob-pull is set the locking-pin G, which engages with the escutcheon-plate by means of the pin-holes h.
J is a pin attached to the spindle, which limits the extent to which it may be pulled out, and K is a spiral spring surrounding the spindle, which pulls it back when the knob is released.
In operating my invention the knob is pulledout, so as to disengage the locking-pin from the escutcheon-plate, and is turned as far as desired, with the result of moving the connecting-rod and lever down or up, as the case may be, and opening or closing the transom, and when the knob-pull is released the locking-pin enters one of the pin-holes in the escutcheon-plate and locks the transom in place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a transom-lifter, the combination of the transom-j ournal, operating-lever, jointed connectin g-rod, spindle-lever, spindle-sprin g, perforated escutcheon-plate, and spindle having the knob-pull and locking-pin, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES KELLY.
