Description
C. B. CLARK. GATE-LATCH.
No. 195,798. Patented ommen se. e
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
OHARLES'B. CLARK, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,798, dated October 2, 1577; application tiled March 27, 1877.
To all whom fit 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. CLARK, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latch, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improved latch, and is designed especially as a gate-latch, although it may be applied to other purposes, its object being to provide a cheap and effective latch which can be readily constructed and applied to a gate, door, or jamb of the same; and it consists, first, in an improved latch-lever provided with a thumb piece or bearing at one end, and with a latch-bolt at right angles at the other, secured within a suitable casing to be fastened to the edge of a gate or door, or the jamb ofthe same, and operated as hereinafter more fully set forth; and, second, in the combination, with said latchlever, which is provided with a segment of cogs or teeth at its innerend, of a similar latch-lever with the bolt omitted, which gears into the cogs on the first-mentioned lever, to provide for Operating the bolt from opposite sides of a gate or door.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved latch secured to the jamb of a door or to a gate-post; and Fig. 2, a detached view of the latch, showing the i. rear of the same, the covering-plate being removed.
The letter A represents a casing, preferably constructed of cast metal, with arecess, B, on its under side, opening, as shown at C, at each side of said casing. The said casing is also provided with a segmental opening, D, in which the latch-bolt works.
E represents a latch-lever, pivoted On a stud, F, which is cast with Or secured in the casing A, said lever being provided with a thmnbbearing at its outer` end, which projects through one of the Openings O, and a latch-bolt, G, at right angles, which projects through the segmental opening in the casing. The inner end of said latch-lever E is provided with a segment of cogs or teeth, H, which gear into the teeth of a similarly-formed latch-lever, I, pivoted in similar manner to the Opposite side of the casing, and projecting through the Opposite aperture C, in order that it may be conveniently operated.
The casing is provided with apertures for the insertion of screws or other fastening devices, and with a protecting cover-plate at the lower side, for securing the latch-levers in position.
The latch as thus constructed maybe applied either to the t'ront edge of a gate or door, or to the post or jamb of the gate or door, a suitable keeper being secured opposite it, to the gate or door, Or to the post or jamb, as may be required.
The advantages of my improvement will be apparent from the above description. Owing to the eXtreme simplicity of the parts, each can be cast in one piece ready to be put together, and the parts are securelyfastened in the casing by means of the screws by which the casing is secured to its seat. 1 thus produce a latch combining great beauty with simplicity and cheapness.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door or gate latch, an oscillating latch-lever, pivoted in a suitable casin g or support, and provided at one end with a handle Or thumb-bearing projecting through one sideI ofthe casing, and at the other with a latchbolt at right angles projecting through a segmental aperture in the casing, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bolt and latchlever, the latter being provided at its inner end with a seglnent of teeth or cogs, Of a similar latch-lever provided with teeth or cogs, gearing into the teeth or cogs of thc first-mentioned lever, and projecting on the opposite side of the casing, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot' thc subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES B. CLARK.
'itnesses ALBERT H. NORRIS, J. W. HAMILTON JOHNSON.
