,(ModeL) I i C. E. BILLINGS.
RE ERSIBLE LATCH.
No. 286.580. Patented Oct. 16, 1883.

CLARK E. BILLINGS, or irinnLnsnX, VERMONT.
REVERSIBLE LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 286,580, dated October 16 1.883.
) Application filed February '23, 1833. (ModeL) tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
, My inventionrelaies to door-latches; and it consists of the construction and combination of the latching and locking devices, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view without the removable plate, showing the construction and positions of the devices when the latch-bolt is thrown out and locked. Fig. 2 is the same view, sh owing the bolt thrown back. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views of the eX- ternal devices for operating the latch-lock attached to a door. the external locking devices detached used with my spring-latch. Fig. 7 shows in perspective the external locking devices detached used with my gravitatinglatch. Fig. 8 is a view of the bent key. Fig. 9 shows the locking device applied to the gravitating latch.
location of knob-shank near the back part of the latchcase, and the arrangement of the A is the latch-bolt, provided with the double recesses b b and the double flanges b b on its end, formed to catch the lug c on the screwstud c, forming the stop to the outward throw of the latch-bolt.
B is a tumbler, pivoted on the pin d. This tumbler is provided with the flanged end d and the lugs c 0 on opposite sides of the tumbler, forming the bearings of the lugs d d on the knob-lever O. i
D is a spring, the forward end of which extends into a recess in the lower part of the lug c and bearing against a rounded projection or lug, c, on the tumbler, and the other end of the spring is inserted between and held by the studs h 71., form ed on the latch-case. By this construction and adjustment of the tumbler near the front part of the latch-bolt and the spring, increased power is obtained to overcome the friction of the boltknob and con- Fig. 6 shows in perspective necting devices, and thus secure with certainty the outward throw of the latch-bolt, while it places the knob at the greatest possible distance from the door-jamb.
E is a detent-stud formed on the sleeve f, having through it a square socket to receive the square shank or spindle f, attached to the circular plate f provided with apin or knob, f This plate is let in flush with the face of the door, and the knob-rose 70 extends partly over it, and a hook, it, is pivoted on ascrew in the door, in position to hook over the pin f", as shown in Fig. 3 of thedrawings. The shank f extends through the door and sleeve f into the inner end of the socket-f, formed on the knob-rose f in position to receive the end of the key F, bent as shown, to enable the key to be readily inserted.
1 The locking device is readily applied toiny receive the flange a of the rose H, constructed to receive and hold in place the head adjusted to turn freely in the rose, which is provided with a notch, a", corresponding in size with the notch at, to receive the locking-hook 7c, pivoted on one of the screws which fasten the rose to the door. a
The external devices for operating the latchlooking devices are placed on the inner face of the door for the purpose of locking the latch from the inside of the room. The shank f must be inserted through the sleeve f in such position as will place the pin f 3 or the notch c in position to receive the hook is when the detent E is turned against the end of the latchbolt A, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The latch-case may be made to receivethe devices of an ordinary door-lock, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
I am aware that various devices have been used for locking door-latches, and my'present invention, relating to the latches and their locking devices, consists in and covers only the particular construction, arrangement, and combination of the devices herein specifically set forth and claimed.
What I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 'is
1. The combination of the latch-bolt A, having the double recesses I) 1) near its front end and the double flanges b b on its rear end, the screw-stud 0, provided with the stop -lug c, the
tumbler B, pivoted at its lower part, near the front of the 1atch-,case, and provided with the flanged end (1, extended into one of the recesses of the bolt, and having the lugs o" c on opposite sides of the tumbler, the knob-lever 0, arranged on a spindle located near the rear of the latch-case, and provided with. the lugs (7, d on the forward part ofthe lever, in position to engage the lugs on the tumbler, and the spring D, secured in place by the studs h h, and having its forward end arranged in a I cess; in the lug c of the tumbler, said tumbler being provided with a curved bearing for the spring substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the detentE,formed on the sleeve f, having through it an angular socket, of the angular shank or spindle f, provided at one end with the circular plate f adapted to be let in flush with the inner face of the door, and provided with apin, f located in position to receive and lock against the pivoted hook is, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARK E. BTLLINGS.
