Description
K. M d 0 M 0 W Patented Aug. 24,1897.
UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT OREN WYMAN, OF TURNERS FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES A. GUNN, OF SAME PLACE.
KNOB-SPINDLE FAST'ENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 588,673, dated August 24, 1897. Application filed April 20, 1897. Serial No. 633,046. (NoniodeL) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT OREN WYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turners Falls, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Lockin g Door-Knobs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for lockin g the door-knobs of a door, or the shaft on which said knobs are mounted, in position, so as to prevent the operation of the lock; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be applied to the locks of doors as usually constructed, the mechanism of the lock itself being unchanged. I
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the edge of a door provided with an ordinary lock and showing my improvement connected therewith, part of the construction being shown in section; and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the line m x of Fig. 1, showing a'slightly-modified form of construction.
In the drawings forming part of thisspecification the separate. parts of my'iinprovement are designated by numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 an ordinary door which is provided with the ordinary lock, the
latch of which is shown at 6, and said doorv is provided at its opposite sides with the usual escutcheon-plates, through which are passed the shaft 8, on which the doorknobs are mounted, and in the practice of my invention I form on the upper side of each ofthe escutcheon-plates 7 a shoulder or projection 9, and referring to Figs. 1 and 2 I form a vertical bore or passage 10 in said shoulder or proj ection, which is adapted to communicate with a corresponding cavity or recess 11 in the shaft 8, and through said bore or passage I pass a lockingp'in 12, the end of which is adapted to enter the cavity or recess 11 in the shaft 8., and said locking-pin 12, or the upper end thereof, is bent outwardly and downwardly to form a loop 13, at the lower end of which the side of said loop is bent inwardly to form a hook 141:, which is adapted to enter a bayonet-slot 15, formed in the outer side of the shoulder or projection 9.
The hook 14 of the loop 13 of the lockingpin 12 is adapted to move in said bayonetslot, and when said pin is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the door-lock or the latchbolt thereof may be operated in the usual manner by turning one of the knobs 16, but when said pin is in its lowest position it will engage with the shaft 8, on which the doorknobs are mounted, and said knobs and said shaft cannot be operated.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 I secure in the vertical portion of the bayonetslot 15 a spring 17, which isadapted to bear on the hook 14: of the loop 13 of the locking pin 12, and the object of this spring is to prevent the too free movement of the lockingpin and to cause friction in the operation thereof and also to force the hook 14 into the angular extension of the bayonet-slot and to hold it therein until the said pin is operated by hand.
It will be apparent that this device may be used on the inner side of the door only, or in the case of partition-doors it may be applied to both sides thereof, and it will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the escutcheonplate of a door-lock, which is providedwitha shoulder or projection on one side thereof, of a locking-pin which is passed through said shoulder or projection, and which is adapted to engage with the shaft on which the doorknobs are mounted, said locking-pin being provided at its outer or free end with a loop on which is formed an inwardly-directed hook, and said shoulder or projection being provided with a bayonet-slot in which said hook operates, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the escutcheonplate of a door-lock, which is provided with a shoulder or projection 011 one side thereof, of a locking-pin which is passed through said shoulder or projection, and which is adapted to engage with the shaft on which the doorknobs are mounted, said locking-pin being provided at its outer or free end with a loop on Which is formed an inwardly-directed hook,
and said shoulder or projection being provided with a bayonet-slot in which said hook
