Specication of Letters Patent.
DOOR OPENER` AND CLOSER.
, Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
Application filed March 19, 1917. Serial No. 155,922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELI 4b. STRAUB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Door Opener and Closer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus for the Opening and closing of doors, and particularly to the opening and closing of hinged doors which are located on a floor other than that on which a person may be standing. The Object of the present invention is to provide a substantial, effective and reliable device whereby doors may be op Aerated from a point more or less distant from the door, means being provided in combination with the door opening Adevice to release the latch of the door.
It is the further object of the device to permit the door to be operated in the ordinary way irrespective of said device. The
invention consists of the parts and construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan view, showing the door in horizontal cross-section.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus, i
looking toward the inside surface of the door.
Fig. 3 is'an enlarged frontelevation of the sliding bolt construction on the wall as indicated by the arrow 3 in Fig. l.
My invention comprises a train of links, sliding bolts and levers, whereby power being applied to handle 4 connecting through link Or rod 5 sliding-bolt 6, link 7, slidingbolt 8 and link 9, to crank 10 on shaft of door knob, will release latch and open door 3. The initial pull of handle 4 releases the door latch and a continuation of pull opens door 3. 'Ihe reverse of this movement will close the door. Handle 4 is located at a point distantl from the door, frequently at top of stairs and is connected with link 5. Link 5 is ieXible wire rod, inclosed in a casing Of metal Or wood for its support and direction and is placed on face of a Wall, in a wall, Or on stair hand-rail, and connects Copies of this patent may be obtained for y.handle 4 with sliding-bolt 6. In the act of opening the door, sliding-bolt 6 moves from A to B and is inclosed ina casing 11, which has a slot longitudinally of its axis A to B through which the projection of slidin bolt 6 extends for connection with link Link 7 connects sliding-bolt 6 to slidingbolt 8 with hinge joints. Sliding-bolt 8 has a vlimited movement longitudinally of its casing 12, C to D, and normally is held by coil spring toward C. Rod 9 links slidingbolt 8 to crank l0 which has a slot 13, permitting the release of latch irrespective of the device. ,Crank 10 connects rod 9 with shaft of door knob back of escutcheon.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by .Letters Patent is A door opener andl closercomprising the combination with a door, a door-knob shaft and a wall at right angles to the door, of
a crank fixed on the shaft and having a slot in its outer end concentric with the shaft, a rigid link provided with a ypin at one end which seats within said slotted opening and formed at its otherend with'aportion of reduced diameter, a casing fastened upon the face of the door and adjacent the hinged side thereof within which the reduced end portion isslidably supported horizontally, a clevisdisposed around the reduced portion of the link, a helical expansion spring positioned within the casing and adapted to bear against the'end wall thereof and the clevis, a connecting link pivotally secured to the clevis at one end, a sliding bolt to which thev opposite end of the connecting link is pivotally secured, a slotted guide casing secured along the wall and within which the bolt slides, an actuating rod pivotally secured to the opposite end of said bolt and i extending to a remote point, and a handle upon the end of said rod whereby the device .may be actuated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto s et j my Vhand in the presence of two subscribing five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D, G.
