AMPHOTO'LHHOGRAPHIG 60 N vfrusaomvs's mocsss UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. LEWIS, OFGAINESV ILLE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEVERS FOR LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,588, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. Lnwrs, of Gainesville, in the county of Sumter and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Ohildrens Door-Opener, of which the tollowing is a specification:
The accompanying drawing is a side view of a door provided with my invention.
This invention relates to an attachment to door-knobs, whereby the latch mechanism is brought within reach of small children, who can thus Open the doors. The invention consists in a knob-lever constructed with jaws and held by a key, and in providing a knoblever with spring and cord, and arranging it horizontally in a stop-box, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
A in the drawing is the shank of a doorknob on a door, B. G is a lever or arm projecting from the knob-shank. This lever is fastened to the shank of the knob by means of the two jaws a b that are screwed together. Between the jaws and knob-shank is titted a key, f, to prevent the lever from turning on the knob-shank. The outer end of the lever" is confined within the box D that is fastened to the door. The lever is placed horizontally and a cord, d, suspended from it, so that a child can easily reach the cord and, by pulling it, open the latch. Aflat, spiral, or other spring, 0, is applied against the under side of the lever to hold the latch closed as long as the lever is not moved by hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lever 0, having jaws a b, and held rigidly to knob-shank A by the key f, as described.
2. A knob-lever, 0, applied horizontally, and having spring a and cord d, in combination with a stop, 1), arranged as and for the purpose described. 1
