UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. PREVOST, OF RACINE, NVISOONSIN.
SAND-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 408,433, dated August 6, 1889. Application filed September 2l, 1888. Serial No. 286,037. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. PREVOST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Paper Holders;
and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for holding and operating with sand-paper and emerycloth, and is of similar character to the holder shown and described in my United States Letters Patent No. 378,522, granted me February 2s, 18er.
The invention consists of certain features of improved construction, which are disclosed in the following specification and claims.
My objectis to construct a holder which will enable a person using it to operate successfully upon a straight or curved surface.
I have illustrated my invention in the annexed drawings, with reference to which I will describe the same as follows:
Figure l is a perspective view of my device when in position for operating upon a concave surface. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the face of the holder straight. Fig 3 is a cross-sectional view.
The same reference-letter indicates identical parts in all the figures.
A is a iiexible base-plate provided on its under side with an elastic cushion B. Upon the upper side of the base-plate A is secured a hand-graspconsisting of two parts C C', rigidly secured thereto near its opposite edges, and having a considerable space between them.` The two clamping-jaws D D are each provided with a thumb-piece d and are pivoted at c c. The thumb pieces d of the clamping jaws operate in openings E E, formed in the sides of the parts C O of the hand-grasp, and are preferably constructed so as to conform to the shape of the handgrasp. The thumb-pieces d d are provided on their inner sides with a stud or projection g,
which engages one end of a spring g, the other end of which fits in a recess formed in the inner side of the parts C C of the handgrasp. These springs g, acting upon the thumb-piece CZ d, hold the clamping-jaws against the sand-paper or emery-cloth.
To use my device, one of the thumb-pieces d is pressed until the clamping-jaw to which it is attached is raised sufficiently to allow the insertion of a piece of sandpaper or emery-cloth,which is pushed under the clamp a sufficient distance to insure its being held. The paper is then bent over the face of the cushioned base-plate and the opposite edge clamped in the same manner. By pressing the parts O C of the hand-grasp together the base-plate is curved, as shown in Fig. l, for operation upon a concaved surface, and by forcing the parts C O apart the plate A is curved in the opposite direction. It will be obvious that the construction may be modified for giving greater convexity to the operating-surface by increasing the space between the parts C C of the hand-grasps.
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The co1nbination,with the flexible baseplate, ofa hand-grasp consisting of two parts attached near opposite edges to said plate, and pivoted clamping-jaws, substantially as described.
2. The combinatiomwith the flexible baseplate, of a hand-grasp consisting of two parts attached near opposite edges to said plate, substantially as described.
The combination, with the flexible baseplate, of a hand-grasp attached thereto, and the pivoted clamping-jaws having operatingeXtensions in close proximity to the said handgrasp, said extensions being rigidly connected with said clamping-jaws, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS L. PREVOST.
