Application January 16, 1948, Serial No. 2,586 3 Claims. (01. 51 -187) This invention appertains to hand sanders and more particularly to novel means for releasably holdin a removable strip or sheet upon a desired support.
It is highly advantageous, in hand sanders and in certain other equipment, to provide releasable means for firmly holding a, removable strip in proper operative position against movement in its support or backing, which can be easily manipulated to permit the quick and convenient removal or a Worn strip and the replacing thereof by a fresh strip.
It is, therefore, one of the primary objects of my invention to provide novel means associated with a carrier; which in its operative position will firmly engage the ends of a removable strip to effectively hold the same in position, and which when in its released, inoperative position will be held above the carrier and strip, so as to permit the convenient and instant withdrawal of a worn strip and the replacing thereof by a fresh strip.
Another salient object of this invention is the provision of a carrier having upturned holding flanges or ribs at the ends thereof over which the terminals of the strip to be held are placed with novel jaws on the carrier for firmly clamping the strip against said ribs or flanges.
A further important object of my invention is the provision of novel means for resiliently mountin the jaws on the carrier and for normally urging the jaws to their clamping position with novelly mounted finger levers for holding the jaws in a raised, released position against the tension of said resilient mounting.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claims. It being understood that such changes in the precise embodiments of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated a complete example of the disclosed embodiments of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view through a hand sander embodying the principles of my invention, the section being taken on line I--I of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 2 is a horizontal, sectional view taken z on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a transverse, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, side elevational view illustrating the strip holdin device appliedto an electrically operated sander.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter S generally indicates a hand sander showing my novel mechanism for detachably clamping a removable strip in place. I
The hand sander S can be of any desired character, either manually operated or electrically operated.
As illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 the sander S includes a carrier of backing plate 5, and this plate has secured thereto an upstanding block 6 to which in turn is connected a manipulating hand grip I. The carrier or plate 5 can be formed from sheet metal, if so desired, and the same has formed on its longitudinal edges depending parallel retaining flanges 8. The ends of the plate 5 have formed thereon upturned right angularly extending ribs 9. The strip II) to be held is placed over the bottom of the carrier plate 5, and the terminals of the strip II) are folded over the ribs 9. A cushion, such as a felt pad II, is placed between the plate 5 and the strip II. The flanges 8 retain the cushion in place and prevent lateral shifting thereof.
The novel means for detachably clamping the strip Ill in place comprises end clamping jaws I2 and I3. These jaws are identical in construction, and each includes the downturned clamping edges I4 which are arranged in close proximity to the ribs 9, so that when the laws are in clamping position, the terminals of the strip Ill will be tightly gripped between said jaws and the ribs. The jaws I2 and I3 extend transversely across the plate 5 and the jaws are connected by spaced parallel leaf I springs I5, which extend longitudinally Of the plate. The springs I5 intermediate their ends are securely fastened to the plate 5 by any preferred means, such as rivets It. The springs function to normally urge and hold the jaws l2 and I3 down tight against the terminals of the strip II and due to the position of the clamping edges I4 of the jaws, the paper is held between the ribs 9 and the jaws. While I have shown the springs I5 extending from one jaw to the other, it is to be understood that independent springs can be utilized for each law.
In order to hold the jaws I2 and I3 in a raised inoperative position, above the plate and the terminals of the strip II], I provide a novel manipulating finger lever I! for each jaw. Each finger manipulation lever l1 includes a centrally disposed finger piece It which is fitted between the springs l5, so that this finger piece can be conveniently grasped by the user of the device. Depending from the ends of the finger piece l8 and extending laterally therefrom are the lift arms 19. These arms I9 extend under the springs l5, and the springs have formed therein transversely extending open sockets or hinge barrels which receive the upper edges of the lift arms 89. Each jaw is also provided with an inwardly extending curved tongue 2| which extends under each manipulating finger .piece 18, and the tongues serve as a support for the finger pieces and hold the arms IS in the seats or open hinge barrels 20.
By raising up on the finger pieces, the arms [9 ride on the plate 5 and lift up the jaws to a raised, inoperative position above the plate and the terminals of the strip 5, so that the strip can be quickly and easily removed from the plate.
Obviously a new strip can be quickly placed on the plate, and the terminals thereof folded over the ribs 9. Upon the downward swinging of the finger pieces 18, the arms It will be moved from their upright position so as to permit the snapping down of the jaws to their clamping position.
The plate 5 can have struck-up therefrom stop lugs 22 which limit theswinging movement of the arms and their manipulating finger pieces.
As heretofore brought out, my releasable holding means for the strip 5 can be employed on a manually operated sander or an electrically operated sander, and in Figure 4, I have shown an electrically operated hand sander E, which can be of the same type as illustrated in my co-pending application Serial No. 789,692, filed Decemlarge extent in my patent No. 2,324,292 issued to me July 13, 1943. As illustrated in the drawing the hand sander E includes a casing 25 housing alternating electromagnets 26. When current is supplied to the magnets 26, the armatures 23 will be rapidly operated back and forth and the carrier or backing plate 5 will be reciprocated. In actual practice the armatures 23 are supported by springs 2"! which normally tend to move the armatures away from the magnets.
I claim:
1. In a device for detachably holding a removable 'strip in place, a carrier having one end provided with an upturned rib, a transversely extending jaw, leaf springs connected with the jaw, means securing the leaf springs to the carrier for normally urging the jaw into engagement with the strip, said jaw, when in clamping position being in close proximity to the upturned rib, means for lifting the jaw against said springs including a, unitary fiat plate mounted for swinging movement having a finger piece disposed between the springs and laterally extending lift arms on the finger piece extending under the springs with their lower edges restin upon said carrier, said springs having arcuate seats receiving the upper edges of the arms, said arms in one positionlifting and holding the springs and jaws in a raised, inoperative position. 7
2. In a device for detachably holding a removable strip in place, a carrier having one end provided with an upturned rib, a transversely extending jaw, leaf springs connected with the jaw, means securing the leaf springs to the carrier for normally urging the jaw into engagement with the strip, said jaw, when in clamping position, being in close proximity to the upturned rib, a finger piece disposed between the springs, laterally extending lift arms on the finger piece extending under the springs, said springs having arcuate seats receiving the upper edges of the arms, said arms in one position lifting and holding the springs and jaws in a raised, inoperative position, and an inwardl extending resilient tongue on the jaw extending under and engaging the finger piece for holding the arms in said seats.
3. In a hand sander, a carrier plate, upturned ribs on the ends of the plate, an abrasive strip on the lower face of the plate having its terminals folded over the ribs, a transversely extending jaw at eachend of the plate having a downwardly turned edge for engaging the strip in close proximity to the rib, a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally extending leaf springs uniting the jaws, means securing an intermediate portion of the springs to the plate, said spring, adjacent to said jaws, having arcuate seats, and. means for raising and holding each jaw and its springs in a released position including a finger piece disposed between the springs and laterally extending lift arms on the ends of the finger pieces disposed under the springs and having their upper edges received in said seats, and a tongue on each jaw extending under the finger piece.
