- the air withdrawal serves various purposes, especially to aid in the transport of the fibers into the turbine, to cool the high speed turbine and to withdraw possibly occurring dust and lint.
- an object of the present invention to provide the housing for subatmospheric pressure spinning turbines with a passage system which will permit operating the spinning turbine in both directions of rotation while meeting the requirements for guiding the air in such a way that turbulence and deposits will be avoided.

- the objects of the present invention may be realized in two ways.
- One solution starts with a passage system for withdrawing air according to which the tangential withdrawal of the air is effected in a direction counter to the direction of rotation of the spinning turbine. More specifically, for the clockwise and the counterclockwise rotation of the spinning turbine, two separate passages are provided through which the air is selectively tangentially withdrawn in a direction opposite to the respective direction of rotation of the spinning turbine.
- the two withdrawing passages are expediently arranged symmetrically with regard to the transverse plane of symmetry while a central slide is operable to alternately open one or the other passage.
- the housing is on one side of the spinning turbine provided with a radial withdrawal slot which extends through the entire diameter range and from which the air is centrally withdrawn through a suction head.
- the suction slot has a constant width in the region of the spinning turbine.
- FIGS. 1 and 2 show a section through a housing of an open-end spinning turbine operating at subatmispheric pressure, the section being taken transverse to the axis of rotation of the spinning turbine.
- FIG. 1 shows an arrangement according to which for the clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of the spinning turbine or rotor l the housing 2 is provided with two separate passages 3, 3a which are arranged tangentially with regard to the turbine or rotor.
- the air may selectively be withdrawn from the region of the turbine or rotor through one of the two passages 3, 3a in the direction counter to the direction of rotation of the turbine or rotor.
- the passages 3, 3a in the housing are arranged expediently as an image to each other; and by shifting the central slide 5 in one or the other direction indicated by the double arrow a, the passages 3, 3a may selectively be connected with the suction lines 4, 4a respectively.
- the suction lines 4, 4a may either be stationary and the communication thereof with the passages 3, 3a may be controlled by the openings 50, 5b in the slide 5, or there may be provided only one suction line 4 which is connected to the slide 5 and is moved therewith so as to be alternately connected to the passage 3 or the passage 3a through one and the same opening 5a.
- suction lines 4, 4a are fastened by way of nipple means 4 and 4" respectively on the housing 2, and the suction lines are connectable by way of the openings 5a, 5b with the passages 3, 3a respectively.
- a radial suction slot 6 which extends over the entire diameter range of the spinning turbine.
- This suction slot 6 extends over the entire necessary width of the housing.
- the suction slot has a constant width in the region of the spinning turbine.
- the air is withdrawn through a funnelshaped portion 7a and the suction opening 7b which is located centrally with regard to slot 6 and radially with regard to the axis of rotation of the turbine or rotor l and which communicates with the centrally located suction line 70.
- the suction opening 7b and the suction line are arranged on the suction head 7 to which the housing 2 is detachably connected.
- both embodiments of the invention as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 are suitable so to effect the withdrawal of air that the formation of whirl and deposits will be avoided regardless of whether the turbine rotates in clockwise or in counterclockwise direction.
- a housing for an open-end spinning rotor rotatable in clockwise and counterclockwise directions and operable at subatmospheric pressure which includes in combination, chamber means for receiving a spinning rotor, two conduits respectively connectable to a suction device, said conduits being tangentially oriented with respect to said rotor, one of said conduits defining a suction outlet for tangential air withdrawal in the clockwise direction of rotor rotation and the other of said conduits defining a suction outlet for tangential air withdrawal in the counterclockwise direction of rotor rotation, and control means associated with said conduits and operable selectively to close off either one of said conduits while simultaneously leaving the respective other one of said conduits open for connection to said suction device.
- a housing for an open-end spinning rotor rotatable in clockwise and counterclockwise directions and operable at subatmospheric pressure which includes in combination, chamber means for receiving a spinning rotor, and suction conduit means for Withdrawing air from said chamber, said suction conduit means having a divergent funnel-shaped portion leading into said chamber, said funnel-shaped portion diverging to a width sufficient to span substantially the entire diameter of said spinning rotor, said funnel-shaped portion defining a flow path for tangential air Withdrawal from said chamber for either clockwise or counterclockwise rotor rotation.
- conduit means comprise two separate conduits respectively connectable to a suction device and control means associated with said conduits and operable selectively to close off either one of said conduits while simultaneously leaving the respective other one of said conduits open for connection to a suction device.
- control means includes a reciprocable slide having a bore therethrough alternately connectable with either one of said conduits.
- conduit means comprises a single conduit having a slot extending over the entire diameter length of a spinning rotor to be mounted in said housing, said slot having a substantially central bore connectable to a suction device.
