UNITED STATES PATENT GEORG SGHOEN, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
BUSTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379.419, dated March 13, 1888.
Application filed November 25, 1887. Serial No. 256,079. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG SoHOEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Bustles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved bustle for ladies and misses, which has the advantage of being capable of adjustment to different size and bulge; and the invention consists of a bustle composed of side stays, a center stay provided with a loop-shaped return-stay made in one piece therewith, transverse inner stays attached to the side stays and the return-stay, and transverse outer stays attached to the side stays and guided in loops of the center stay, the side stays, center stay, and outer stays being formed of overlapping sections and connecting friction-sleeves.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, Fig. 2 a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section on line a: .r, Fig. 1, of my improved bustle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, a ct represent the side stays, b the center stay, 0 the transverse inner stays, and d the transverse outer or rear stays, of my improved bustle. The side and center stays, a a and b. are attached at their upper ends in the usual manner to the belt 6, that extends around the waist, while the ends of the transverse stays e and d are riveted or otherwise attached to the side stays, a a. The side stays, a, the center stay, I), and the outer transverse stays, d, are made extensible by being formed of two overlapping sections, which are connected by sliding friction-sleeves a, b, and (2, attached, respectively, to the end of each stay-section, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The transverse outer stays, d, are guided in loops (1, formed by strips riveted to the under side of the center stay, I), as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The center stay, 12, is made in the shape of a loop and extended from its reenforces the center stay, (I, and imparts the p necessary spring action to the same. By means of the extensible stays the bustle canbe adjusted to any desired size and shape, according to the dress with which it is to be worn;
By elongating or shortening the transverse stays, the center stay, and the side stays the bustle may be adjusted to any size and shape desired, according to the taste of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bustle composed of, side stays, a center stay provided with a loop shaped returnstay made in one piece therewith. transverse inner stays attached to the side stays and the return stay, and transverse outer stays attached to the side stays and guided in loops of the center stay, the side stays, center stay, and outer stays being formed of overlapping sections and connecting friction sleeves, substantially as set forth.
2. A bustle composed of a waistband, extensible side stays, an extensible center stay having fixed guide-loops, a loop -shaped return-stay made integral therewith, transverse inner stays riveted to the side stays and the return-stay, and extensible outer transverse stays riveted to the side stays and guided in the loops of the center stay,the extensible side stays, center stay,and outer stays being formed of overlapping sections and connecting fric' tion sleeves at the ends of said sections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORG SOHOEN.
