SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,829, dated Qctobr 21, 1884.

Be it known that I, CHARLEs XV. HIGEY, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bustles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear` and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part oi' this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the manufacture of bustles.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described. I

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the outer section of fabric, crinoline, Wigan, or other analogous material, half plaited laterally or in its longest direction, and secured by stitching to a lining, B, so as to form vertical pockets O, the top of the outside fabric and the lining being secured to a band, D, which is provided with a buckle or other commonv device for securing such band around the waist of the wearer. Coil-springs F, slightly conical in shape, are inserted loosely one in each of the three pockets', the smaller end of the spring being at the top. The ends of these springs are secured near the top ofthe pockets and at the bottom thereof by hollow rivets a, eyelets, or other suitable devices passing through loops, one at each end of each spring, through the fabric B, and lateral stays b, which are secured to the fabric B by stitching. To each side of the bustle and to the band are secured the wingsE, as shown.
W'hat'l claim as my invention is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a bustle composed of a suitable woven fabric forniing pockets loosely inclosing vertically-pendent coil-springs, increasing in size toward the bottom, substantially corresponding with the increasing diameter of the dress, as described.
2. A bustle composed of vertical pockets secured to a waistband, Veach pocket containing a tapering spiral spring loosely inclosed therein and secured at the top and bottom to the lining of the bustle, substantiallyT as described.
