O. COLUMBUS HUDSON, OF ELMIR'A, NEV YORK.
CASE FOR DISPLAYING TUBES AND VIALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,222, dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed March 1, 1887.
and Vials, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a new and useful improvement relating to cases for the carriage and display of vials and tubes, by means of which is afforded an ornamental receptacle for thevdisplay of goods contained in tubes and vials, and a secure and convenient means of packing the same for storage or transportation.
The inve`ntio'`consists in the particular construction, combination, aud arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part 'of this specification, and in which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the van rious views, Figure 1 is an oblique projection of my improved display-case. Fig. 2 isaplan of theinner face of top piece, B. Fig. 3 is au end elevation of base C, showing jaws and springs. Fig. 4 is a plan ofbase C withontjaws attached; and Fig. 5 is a plan of the under face of base C, showing metal spring g. Fig. 6 is an oblique projection, showing construct-ion of top piece, which may be substituted for the top piece,B, as described hereinafter; and Fig. 7 is a section of said top piece on the line O N ofFig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rectangular frame having on the inner face of its base C the rabbet a, along one side of the central longitudinal Harige. b, the opposite side of said flange being provided with notches c c.
Hinged,or remova-bl y secured to the sides of the base O, are jaws d d, the ends of which are connected to and held firmly against the body ofthe frame A by means of elastic strips ee. In the top piece, B, above and in a line with the rabbet a and the notches c c, are the sockets f f, adapted to receive the corks or caps of vials or tubes. The-bottoms of the tubes and vials rest in the rabbet ct and the notches c c, and are held firmly in place by the jaws d d, which are drawn tightly against the vials and tubes by the elastic strips e e. The tubes or vials are readily removed from the frame by pressing the jaws d d outward far enough to serial No. 230,049. (No model.)
allow the bottoms of the tubes or vials to pass outward over the tops of said jaws. It is also intended to use, when desired, either separately or in connection with the elastic strips e e, and for the purpose of springing saidjaws firmly against the sides of the tubes and vials, the metal strip g, secured to the central part of the under face of the base C, and extending crosswise under the edges of the jaws d d.
If preferable, the construction here shown for the base C, including rabbet, notched ange, jaws, and springs, may be substituted for the construction of top piece, B, shown, in which case the top and bottom of frame A would be same as the bottoni shown in drawings. It will be observed that the rabbeted side of flange shown is especially adapted to hold the bot toms of what are known as collapsible tubes and the notched side of flange for ordinary vials and tubes. 'Ihe elastic strips e e may be placed at one or both ends of jaws, as preferred, and the metal springg may be multiplied, if desirable. The case may be covered with satin or plush or otherwise ornamented.
The central longitudinal flange, Ib, referred to may be constructed with the notches c c on one or both sides of it, or without such notches on either side, at pleasure.
I claim in behalf of this case that its use will, besides affording an ornamental exhibition of those lines'of goods sold. in small tubes and vials, prevent the serious loss which retail dealers experience, through petty thievery, of such goods when loosely shown on store counters and cases.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A case for the carriage and display of vials and tubes, consisting of rectangular frame A, whose base is provided with the rabbet a, the flange b, the jaws d, and. the elastic strips .6, and the inner face of whose top piece, B, is
IOO
and elastic strips e, connecting the jaws (l with the frame A, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a display-case for tubes and vials, the combination, with a rectangular frame, A, the inner surface of one of whose sides is provided with a central longitudinal iiange, b, and rabbet a, of hinged longitudinal jaws d, extending along the sides of said iiange b and rabbet a, and elastic strips e, connecting saidjaws d with said frame A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a display-case for tubes and vials, the
combination, with a rectangular frame, A,the inner surface of one of Whose sides is provided with a central longitudinal ange, b, and rabbet a, of hinged longitudinaljaws d, extending along the sides of said ange band rabbet a, and metal strip g, secured to the outer surface of such side of frame A, and extending laterally across the edges of jaws d, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
