PATENT HERMANN H. GAMMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BASKET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 232,680, dated September 28, 1880. Application filed August 6,1880. (No modelJ 1 v To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMANN H. GAMMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a perspective View of the improvement. Fig. 2, Sheet 1, is a seetional side elevation taken through the line a: as, Fig. 3. Fig. 3, Sheet 1, is a sectional end elevation taken through the line y 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a perspective view of the improvement folded. Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish baskets so constructed that they can be compactly folded for transportation or storage.
The invention consistsin constructing a folding basket of the bottom, the sides hinged to the bottom, made in two parts, hinged to each other, and having chains and flanges at their ends and a wire frame at their upper edges, the ends hinged to the bottom, the springcatches for holding the ends erect, the cover made in three parts, hinged to each other and hinged at the ends of its middle part to the sides, the hooks and eyes for fastening the basket when unfolded and when folded, the two bails, and the hand-piece, grooved longitudinally and having wire bands bent into the groove to adapt the hand-piece to be attached and detached, all constructed and operating as will be hereinafter fully described.
The basket may be made of wood or any other suitable material.
A is the bottom of the basket, which may be made of any desired length and width. To the side edges of the bottom A are hinged the lower edges of the sides B, each of which is made of two equal parts, hinged to each other at their adjacent edges, so that the two parts can be folded together inward, as shown in Fig. 6. The two sides -B are kept from spreadin gapart when raised into avertical position by two chains or wires, 0, attached to the ends of the pivots of the center hinges, and which extend across the ends of the basket, as shown in Fig. l. The sides B are strengthened by the brads P, attached to their middle parts. D are the ends of the basket, which are hinged at their lower edges to the end edges of the bottom A, so that they can be folded down inward upon the said bottom.
When the ends D are raised into a vertical position their side edges rest against flanges E, formed upon or attached to the end edges of the sides B, and against the end bars of the wire frame 0, made in one-piece and attached to the upper edges of the sides B. The ends D are held erect by spring-catches F, attached to the end parts ofthe upper edges of the sidesB.
The middle part, G, of the cover is stationary, and is hinged at its end edges to the middle parts of the upper edges of the sides B, so that the said part G of the cover will not interfere with the folding of the said sides. To the side edges of the middle part, G, of the cover are hinged the inner edges of the end parts, H. To the outer edges of the end parts, H, are hinged hooks I, which hook into eyes J, attached to the upper parts of the ends D, to fasten the cover sh'ut.
When the basket is folded the hooks I are hooked into eyes K, attached to the ends of the bottom A, to fasten the basket folded.
To the upper part of the sides B, at or near the corners of the middle part, G, of the cover, are hinged the ends of two loops or bails, L, the middle parts of which are brought together and inserted in a hand-piece, M, to form a handle. The hand-piece M is grooved longitudinally from its upper side to its center to receive the bails L, and is strengthened by wire bands N passed around its end parts and bent down into its groove. The parts of the wire bands N that enter the groove of the hand-piece M are so formed that only one of the bails L can enter at a time, so that the said wire bands N will serve as stops to keep the said bails L in place.
The basket is folded by detaching the handpiece M, turning down the ends D upon the bottom A, and folding down upon them the sides B. The cover G H H descends with the sides B, and the folded basket is fastened by hooking the hooks I into the eyes K. When the basket is folded-the end parts H of the cover may be passed through the bails L before being fastened, so as to confine the said bails; or the bails L may be left free, or one bail may be left free and turned out to the end of the folded basket, and the hand-piece M placed upon it for convenience in carrying the folded basket in the hand when required.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A folding basket constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the bottom A, the hinged sides B, made in two parts, hinged together, and having chains 0 and flanges E at their ends and a wire frame at their upper edges, the hinged ends D, the spring-catches F, the cover made in three parts, H G H, hinged to each other, and hinged at the ends of the middle part, G, to the sides B, the hooks I, the eyes J K, the bails L, and the hand-piece M N, to adapt the basket to be folded into compact form, as set forth.
2. In a folding basket, the combination, with the bottom A, ofthe hinged sides B, made in two parts, hinged to each other, and having chains 0 and flanges E at their ends and a wire frame at their upper edges, the hinged ends D, the spring-catches F for holding the ends D erect, the cover, made in three parts, H G H, hinged to each other, and hinged at the ends of the middle part, G, to the sides B, and the hooks and eyes I J K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the basket can be folded into compact form, as setforth.
3. In a folding basket, the combination, with the sides B, of the two bails L and the grooved hand-piece M, having wire bands N, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the basket can be conveniently earried,as set forth.
4. In a folding basket, the hand-piece M, grooved longitudinally and provided with wire bands N, bent into its groove, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby it can be attached to and detached from the bails L, as set forth,
