UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
FRANK SIDDALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKING-Box. t
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,329, dated February 1,'1881.- Application tied December 2s, leso. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SIDDALL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the Ycounty of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or Iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciflcation. l
My invention relates to packing-boxes for use by both wholesale and retail houses and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth. y
The object of the invention is to afford such a packing-box of rectangular shape and provided with such a peculiar cover in connection therewith as will be of efficient service to both Wholesale or packing rms, and also to retailers, as will be obvious.
lt is well known that valuable trade-marks and other representations designed to advertise the manufacturers or packers or Wholesalers business are often employed upon packages, which, passing to the consumers through other hands, serve to designate a quality or superiority of goods. It is desirous that such design or representation should be of a striking nature, of attractive appearance, and such as should awaken the attention of passers-by. It is also necessary that the design, being expensive, should be protected from the weather and from liability to damage in transportation.
To thisend my invention consists in a rectangular box or receptacle the sides, ends, and bottom of which are dovetailed or otherwise properly secured, and havinga tri-sided upper portion, having a horizontal groove, in which lits and operates a tenon upon a sliding lid, as shown. The lid is provided upon one side with a proper surface upon which to address the box, andupon theopposite side with a surface adaptedto receive an ornamental, illuminated, or otherydesign, signifying the `quality or style ofthe goods, or setting forth the stand- Y ing of the manufacturers or packers.` The pieces which form the sides and ends of the It will thus be observed that I provide a box whichprotects the outer label by surrounding projecting ledges, and furnish a reversible cover, which not only protects the iirm representation during transportation, but allows `the retailer of the goods to exhibit the said attractive representation by simply reversing the cover. In these peculiarities rest the essential features of the invention.
Referring-to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, Figure l represents a view in perspective of the box; Fi g .2, a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a reverse view of the lid or sliding cover.
A represents the box proper, which is coinposed of the sides a a., ends a a', and bottom a2.
B represents the extension which surrounds both upper and lower edge, the upper one, B', having a longitudinal groove, b, to receive the `tenon c upon the sliding cover C.
What I claim as new isl. The packing-box described, having the extensions B B', the latter provided with horizontalgroove b, combined with a sliding cover, O, having tenori c, as set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. The box A, composed of the parts a a,
a' a', and a?, the extensions B and B', the 1at ter having groove b, the reversible sliding cover C, having tenon c, the said cover being adapted to expose or protect either of its flat surfaces at will, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The box a a a2, having extensions B B', the groove b, cover G c, said cover extending above the horizontal sides ofthe box, as either side is upwarchfor the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
i FRANK SIDDALL.
