Description

WILLIAM J AMEISON,
OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKING-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,636;
dated February 20, 1877; application filec January 8, 1877.} 11
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM .JAMEISON, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Boxes and I-do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, ence marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to blacking-boxes and it consists in providing the same with pins projecting from the sides, and extending below the bottom thereof, for the purpose of holding the box in place while using, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichigure 1 is a perspective view of a blacking-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2, shows two boxes placed one on top of the other.
A represents an ordinary blacking-box, and B is the cover thereof. To the sides of the box A are secured, by soldering or otherwise,
three, four, or more pins, 0 O, which project below the bottom of the box for a suitable distance. The object of is, that when'the box is pressed down, the pins then entering the floor, box, or other article upon which it is placed, to keep the box stationary for removing the lid, and while rubbing the brush in the black to be used it can be ing, thus obviating the necessity of holding and to the letters of referthese projecting pins the blacking-box in the hand, when the person is liable to be smeared with the blacking.
The box is readily loosenedby putting on the cover and bearingdown on one side, raising theiother, and vice versa.
Any inumber of pins 0 may be used, and they are attached to the sides in that position the boxes may be packed just as closeitogether as if they did not have said pins; and there is no liability of defacing any label that may be put on the top of the box whenpacked together.
I am aware that blacking-boxes have been provided with pins or equivalent devices projecting from the bottom; but in such cases the boxes take up more room in packing, and any labels on the tops of the boxes are liable to, and do, become defaced. These objectionsjjare entirely obviated by my invention of attaching the pins to the sides of the boxes, as above stated.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 Letters Patent, is-
A blacking-box provided with a suitable number of pins attached to the sides thereof, and projecting below the bottom of the box, wherebyithe boxes can be packed one upon another inside of the pins, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
