Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. SHEDD, EAST BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRovEo wirr-BRUSHv Specification forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 36,239, dated August 19, 1862.
lmy improvement. Fig. 2 exhibits a vertical section of a hat and a side view of the brush, showing the manner in which the latter is to l be applied to be carried within the former.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre` sponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to'enable a hat-brush t0 be carried in the hat withoutinconvenience; and to this end it consists inV providing thebrush with a spring-clasp suitably arranged on its back and near one end to attach it tothe sweat or head lining of the hat.
The brush itself may be of any construction; but I prefer to make it of a thin flat piece of wood, A, covered on its face with plush, a, as it is an object to have it as thin as possible, and in such case I attach to the back a handle, B, to enable it to be easily laid hold of and used. Gis the clasp, composed of a piece of sheet-brass or other metal, having attached to it a thumb-piece, d, of wire,V or made all of one piece and attached to the back of A by a coiled spring, b, which operates like a hinge, and also acts to press the endo of the plate toward the back ot' A, but yields to pressure of the thumb applied to the thumbpiece for the purpose of removing the end c from the back of A.
When the brush is lplaced in the hat, the" thumb-piece is pressed upon to remove the end c ofthe clasp from the back of A, and theend of the brush next to which the thumb-pieceis attached is slipped between the sweat f and the body of the hat,`w`ith the face of the brush next the hat-body, and the clasp is brought over the sweat. The opposite end of the brush is then pressed against the crown of the hat,
and on the clasp being released the spring b presses it against the sweat, to Which-thebrushis thus secured. I prefer to apply the brush at the back of the hat, as in that position it will not inconvenience the wearer.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Furnishing the brush with a spring-clasp, applied and arranged upon its back to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
