Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR MAGINNIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VENTILATING-HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,035, dated May 17, 1859.k
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MAGINNIS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating-Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging a Ventilating hat, substantially in the manner hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective view of the hat. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with lower part 'cut off. Fig. 3 is a top view of the corrugated band.
In the drawings A, represents the body of the hat which is made in any of the usual forms.
D, represents the sweat leather one side of which is here represented as loose and hanging away from its proper position.
C, represents a corrugated band of india rubber, or of metal,-if the band, C, is made of rubber. Said rubber is made firm and hard, so that the corrugations will not mash down. This band it will be seen is corru* gated only on two sides, its rear and front being made perfectly plain and smooth. This band is secured within the lower part of the hat between the sweat leather and the hat by means of thread a, a, which is seen passing through it into the hat. The lower portion of the sweat leather covers the band C, and is secured to the hat in the usual manner.
a', a", represent holes made in the edge of the sweat leather which lead into the corrugations of the band C. el, al, d, holes which are cut through the hat just above the brim on the outside. These holes pass through the hat band, through the body of the hat and either into the corrugations or just above them, letting a current of air into the hat between the sweat leather and the body.
The hat is provided with a hole in the top which is made in any ordinary manner.
Many efforts have been made to get up a Ventilating hat which could be brought into general use, but heretofore this has not been afected. Where hats have been ventilated from below they have been usually made so large and cumbersome that they could not be introduced. James "W, Beebe obtained a patent on a Ventilating hat, in which the air is introduced through perforations in aanch, in the lower part of the sweat leather, but his plan will not answer, for as soon as the head becomes warm, and perspires freely, the sweat leather becomes soft and pliable and hugs the body of the hat so tightly that no air can possibly pass between them. Corrugated bands may have been used but the corrugations extending all around the hat, that hat must be made several sizes larger than it should be. Y
A hat should be made to fit the head ony the back and front, and the head is generally so formed that the hat does not touchk it on the temples. The corrugations are about of an inch high and being made on each side next to the temples, ample room is afforded for them. This band C, being made of india rubber, it gives readily in front and rear and the hat fits the head snugly-but sufficient pressure cannot come on the sides to press down the corrugations.
I do not wish to claim a corrugated band placed between the sweat leather and the body when the band is corrugated all around, as such a band cannot answer.
I am aware that holes in the sweat leather and holes in the sides of the hat above the brim are not new, but in connection with such a band as I have described are new and highly useful.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the perforated hat body the perforated sweat leather and the intervening corrugated band C, when said band is provided with corrugations upon its two sides and made plain and smooth on its rear and front, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
ARTHUR MAGINNIS.
