Abstract

A NIP DEVICE FOR A FOUNTAIN PEN FED BY MEANS OF A TONGUE OF CAPILLARY MATERIAL CONNECTED TO THE INK RESERVOIR AND LOCATED BETWEEN TEH EXTERNAL FACE OF THE NIB AND THE WALL OF THE FOUNTAIN PEN SECTION RECEIVING THE LATTER. THE UPPER FACE OF THE NIB IS PROVIDED WITH A RECESS DESIGNED TO HOUSE THE TONGUE SO THAT THE FORWARD PORTION THEREOF IS NOT EXPOSED AT THE ATMOSPHERE.

The upper face of the nib is provided with a recess designed to house the tongue so that the forward portion thereof is not exposed at the atmosphere.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a nib device for a fountain pen fed with ink by means of a tongue made of capillary material connected to the ink reserve and inserted between the external face of the nib and the wall of the fountain pen section receiving it.
BACKGROUND `OF THE INVENTION Fountain pens or stylographs are known in which feeding of the nib is provided by a tongue made of capillary material loaded with ink from the ink reserve (reservoir, free level ink cartridge, capillary mass containing ink) and placed between the external face of the nib and the wall of the bore receiving the latter.
In these known stylographs, the forward portion of the tongue is exposed to the atmosphere if the stylograph is left in contact with the air without its cap for a long period of time, so that feeding of the nib is not provided in a satisfactory manner upon resumption of writing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a nib device for a fountain pen, which, in spite of the presence of the tongue, does not leave any interval between the nib and the body of the section in which it is housed and is easy to manufacture.
This object is obtained, in a nib device of the above mentioned type, by providing, on part of the upper face o BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. l is a front view of the nib;

Patented Feb. 23, 1971 The nib according to the invention has a contour of the usual shape comprising two longitudinal edges 10 and 11 and two oblique edges 12 and 13 bounding the nib tips 14 and 15.
According to the invention, the nib, instead of comprising a circular cylinder portion or substantially circular portion as a whole, as up to now, comprises in its central portion, a depression or resess 16, which, extending from the back edge 17, is bordered in the forward part by a concave shoulder 18, beyond the junction points i 19 and 20 of sides 10 and 11 respectively with the oblique parts 12 and 13, the longitudinal slit 21, separating the nib tips 14 and 15, extending over a part of the bottom 22 of the depression up to its end 23. It is in said depression, when the pen is mounted into the section, that a spongy material is housed, for instance a tongue 24, which is thus in contact, through its lower face 25, with the bottom 22 of the depression and, through its upper face, with wall 26 of a bore 27 provided in body 28 of section 29, said tongue or the like being in communication, as far as ink circulation is concerned, with a reservoir. The forward end of tongue 24 is in abutment with shoulder 18 as illustrated in FIG. 4. The forward end of body 28, with a rounded surface 30, is immediately opposite the nib tips, so that the latter extend quite substantially beyond the outside surface 31 of the section, the appearance of the stylograph being then that of an axial feeding stylograph, no interval appearing between the nib and the forward edge of the section which might allow the penetration of dust with danger of clogging of the forward portion 36 of tongue 24 whose thickness is slightly greater than the depth of the recess.
The nib may be obtained by simple stamping using a cylindrical nib of the usual type, the stamping leaving unchanged the lateral sides 32 and 33 -bound by edges 1l) and 11 of the nib and edges 34 and 35, respectively, of the depression.
Reference is now made to FIGS. 4 and 5 showing the nib mounted in section 29. Section 29 comprises a housing 40 having a form correlated with that of the nib and that of tonque 24. The nib, together with the tongue, is introduced into said housing and a strip 41 is then driven by force into the part left free in housing 40 for maintaining the nib. A channel 42, provided in strip 41, is provided for the air entry.
I claim:
1. A fountain pen comprising a body, a capillary ink retaining reservoir in said body, said body having a central bore leading to said reservoir and opening externally of the body, a nib in said bore, a strip also in said bore and engaging said nib to hold the same in said bore with a front portion of the nib extending from the bore, said strip having a recess facing said nib and including a step portion forwardly of said recess which defines a passage with said body in which the front portion of the nib is secured, said nib being provided with a depression behind said front portion and forming a shoulder engaging said strip at the back of said step portion, said nib at said depression facing the body and forming a compartment therewith behind said shoulder, and a tongue of capillary material .filling said compartment and having a front end in abutment with the shoulder of said nib and a rear end in abutment with said rservor.
2. A pen as claimed in claim 1, wherein said compartment has a depth slightly less than the thickness of said tongue.
3. A pen as claimed in claim 1, wherein said nib has a slit in the front portion thereof extending rearwardly into said depression.
4. A pen as claimed in claim 3, wherein said nib has curved sides bounding said depression which connect smoothly with said front portion of said shoulder.
5. A fountain pen comprising a body, a capillary ink retaining reservoir in said body, said body having a central bore leading to said reservoir and opening externally of said body, said bore having a substantially rectangularcross-section with lateral channels extending therefrom, a strip in the rectangular section of said bore and having a corresponding section but of smaller height, a fountain pen nib in the bore in the space between the strip and the body, said nib including shoulder portions secured in said channels, said nib having a depression between said shoulder portion to dene with said body a compartment in said bore, said nib having a forward portion behind which said depression extends, said strip and body er1- gaging said front portion of the nib on opposite surfaces thereof to hold said front portion, and a tongue of capillary material in said compartment and having a real end in contact with the reservoir.
