HAT-SWEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,402, dated October 26, 1886.

Application filed August 6, 1836.

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN ELIAs RAN- DEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, inl the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sweat-Leathers for Hats, Ste., of which the\following is a specification.

My invention relates to the sweat leathers or bands of hats, caps, Ste.; and the object of my invention is to produce a sweat-band which shall be variable in length, so as to vary the size of the hat, and which shall be as light and comfortable to the wearer as an ordinary sweatband.

To the above purposes my invention consists Y in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is an under side perspective view of a hat with my improved sweat-band applied thereto, the said sweat-band bei ng turned outward to display its construction. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the sweat-band. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but looking at the opposite end of the sweat-band.

In the said drawings, a designates the sweatband, which may be of leather, or of any other suitable or preferred material, as desired. This band is stitched or otherwise securedin proper position within the hat; but instead of being attached to the hat throughout its length, as is usually the case, the ends a a2 are left free, an extra piece of material, as at b, being secured in the space left by the free ends of the band.

The ends a a? of the band may be tapered off or reduced in width, as shown, if desired;- but while this is preferable, it is notessential to the operation of my invention. The free end a carries ahook, c, the stem c of which is formed of flexible material, for a purpose to bc hereinafter explained. The free end ai is formed with any desired number of holes ai, which are strengthened by a re-enforce piece, d, perforated with a corresponding se-V ries of holes, d', the opening in the free end a2, which receives the hook c, being also strengthened by a re-enforce piece, e. e

From the above construction it will be seen that if the hat is too large for the wearer the defect will be perfectly remedied by engaging the stem in one or the other ofthe holes a, and that the size ofthe hat maybe virtuallyenlarged by moving the hook in the opposite direction. Thus the desired variations in size may be readily made without discomfort to the wearer, and without inconvenient handling of the band or leather. When the hook c has been inserted into the required hole, its end is to be slightly pressed or squeezed, so that; owing to the iiexible character of the hook, the ends of the band may be readily and iirmly securedl together.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The sweat leather or band provided with the free ends a al, in combination with the supplemental piece b, secured to the hat at a point where the said ends meet, and the attaching means to fasten the two ends a a2 together, as set forth.

2. The combination, with ahat, cap, or similar article, of the band a, secured thereto so as to leave the free ends a' a2, the supplemental piece b, secured to the hat, the hook c, and reenforce piece e upon end a', and the holes a3, and re-enforce d, secured to end a2, substantially as set forth.
