HEAD-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,762, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed December 2, 1890. Serial No. 373,313. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Beit known thatl, SIMON TU CH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved I-Iead-Covering, of which the following is a full, clear,'and exact description.
rl`he object of the invention is to provide a new and improved head-covering, more especially designed for childrens and ladies use, and adapted to be readily changed into different shapes without undoing or separating any of the parts.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofv this specification,
' in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. Qis a like view of the saine in a different shape, and Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of the improvement previous to putting the several parts into proper shape. The improved head-covering is provided with the two principal parts, the body or 'frame A, and the covering B. The body or frame A is made in the shape of a cap, of a size to correspond to the head of the wearer, and provided on opposite sides with bands or ribbons C for tying or fastening the hat to the head. On` the front of the body is placed an ornament D, of any desired shape, form, or material, a hunched ruching being, however, preferred. The covering B is made in the shape of a disk, and provided with a series of pliable stays E, sewed in welts F, formed in the material of the covering. The outermost stays are preferably arranged in circles; but l do not limit myself to this particular form. The spaces intervening between the welts are preferably formed into small folds so as to give the entire head-covering an ornamental appearance. 'lhe disk is of considerably greater diam eter than the cap-shape body, and is first secured centrally on the top of the cap-shape body, as plainly illustrated in Fig. l. Part of the disk is bent over onto the side and rear of the cap-shape body and fastened thereon, the front, however, extending beyond and over the ornament D. The pliable stays E permit of bending this projecting part of the covering into any desired shape, so as to vary the appearance of the hat, as desired, some of the forms being illustrated in Figs. l and 2. Thus the head covering can be readily changed without detaching or separating any of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As a new article of manufacture, a headcovering comprising a cap-like body, and an outer covering having pliable stays and extending over the top and part of the sides of the body and secured thereto, a portion of the said covering projecting outward away from the side of the body, and adapted by reason of its pliable stays to be flared or bent to vary the appearance of the article, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a headcovering comprising a cap-like body provided on one side with an ornament, of a disk-like outer covering secured centrally to the top of the body and around its sides to the ornament, and flared outward over said ornament, said outer covering having a series of pocketlikev welts and pliable stays within said welts to permit of varying the appearance of the article, substantially' as set forth.
